Discussion Topic: Ohio State v. Indiana this Friday

I'd imagine most people are confident the Bucks will win but this match is pretty tight on paper.

125: #2 Angel Escobedo v. Nikko Triggas
Another Big Ten stud for Mr. Triggas. Escobedo is a bona fide national title contender.

133: #10 Andrae Hernandez v. #14 Reece Humphrey
Hernandez is a lot like Humphrey - generally good but a bit up and down. This match could go either way. As a comparison, Zach Tanelli has beaten both.

141: Scott Kelly v. #10 J Jaggers
Jaggers should win but Kelly can keep it close.

149: Kurt Kinser v. #5 Lance Palmer
The Bucks have a big advantage at this weight class.

157: #10 Brandon Becker v. Jason Johnstone
Johnstone has wrestled him close before but that's not the same thing as beating Becker.

165: #9 Matt Coughlin v. #13 Colt Sponseller
Ohio fans know Sponseller can win but this will be the highest ranked opponent he's wrestled. Coughlin has to be considered the favorite.

174: Trevor Perry v. Alex Picazo
Perry has not had a great season but he's favored over Picazo who has been pinned in his last two matches. It would be nice to see Picazo stop his slide right here.

184: Marc Bennett v. #3 Mike Pucillo
Bennett has missed some of this season but is good when healthy. He just beat Trevor Brandvold handily. Pucillo should win but bonus points are iffy.

197: Joe Fagiano v. John Weakley
IU's weak spots are the last two weights. The Bucks need a win from Weakley to capture this dual.

285: Nathan Everhart v. #2 J.D. Bergman
Bergman should win big.

Ohio State can be considered the favorite at four weights: 141, 149, 184 and 285 with bonus points possible for Palmer and Bergman. Indiana has the advantage at 125, 157, 165 and 174 with Escobedo likely to get at least a major. 133 and 197 are toss-ups although I'd probably give IU the slightest edge at 133 and a similar nod to Weakley at 197. So who wins the dual? The Buckeyes. Why? Because Sponseller will wear Coughlin down and beat him by 4-6 points. Final: Ohio State 22 Indiana 13

For what it's worth, I watched Coughlin the other night against Wisconsin and was not real impressed. I think this is a perfect first match for Colt against a top 10 guy.

Just don't turn out to be a match like the UT-Chattanooga match; stay intense and focused. I know everyone is kind of looking toward the Michigan match. This will be a test for the coaches to see if they can take their very good team and beat an average Big Ten rival like they are supposed to. And yes, this will be a big match for Colt, to see where he fits in with the ranked guys. It's funny, but I don't think OSU could have asked for a better schedule for bringing Colt along. He's beaten the second tier guys like Donar, Gross, and Rella, now he moves up to the top tier where he will face Coughlin, then Tannenbaum and finally Perry (?) at the Big Ten tournament.

Looks like we match up well. Even in the matches that we should lose on paper, I don't see any possibility of giving up bonus points, aside from 125 possibly, but Triggas has been wrestling well as of late. Although Coughlin is ranked higher, he lost to Rella, a guy that Colt broke, so I think Colt gets his first top 10 victory.

Sponseller now ranked ahead of Coughlin in the InterMat poll. Sponseller now up to 11th in the nation.
