Discussion Topic: The biggest high school dual of the season
Bob Preusse added to this discussion on February 3, 2008

Yesterday Feb 2 in Iowa, i think this is THE biggest dual meet of the season in high school wrestling, visiting # 4 Apple Valley MN won 36 to 30 over host # 3 Waverly Shell Rock Iowa--- and it is 2nd time they have beaten Waverly. AV beat them 29 to 20 at the Clash but Waverly was awarded the title by tiebreaker (since AV themselves had a loss at the Clash, to Montini Catholic Illinois who had a loss too & took 3rd by tiebreaker).

Blair vs st Paris didnt happen--- and st Eds was no match vs st Paris, esp without injured Palmer and Gasber who had just transferred out --- so i think this was the biggest dual of the season nationally, imo.

3 of the top 5 teams this season are public schools: # 1 St Paris Ohio, # 3 is now Apple Valley MN and 4 Waverly Shell Rock Iowa. (Blair at 2, st Eds at 5). Apple Valley also edged # 6 Iowa City West in the MN Xmas tourn, too.

Bob: Curious as to how you categorize Monroeville? This program has 3 nationally ranked wrestlers and a fourth who could soon prove good enough to be ranked. Can an otherwise pedestrian team with four incredible performers enter the national rankings?

Hank,
I don't think Monroeille can be ranked until they have fairly close to a full team anyway. Not sure how many kids they have for a dual. Anyone know?

Monroeville has a full team minus a 160. They have the fab four plus state qualifier Johnson at 125. I hear they have some more kids in the pipeline but none that rival the talent of the fab four.

Dan,

Well maybe Monroeville should be ranked then, in the AWN Prep 40 --- I assumed they had maybe 9 kids on the team which I think was the case one year ago --- but perhaps I should not have "assumed" (as they always warned us in the Army).

You seem to have some knowledge. Do any of their other kids have winning records? How would they do in a dual versus, say, Moeller or Massillon Perry?

They would be slaughtered against Moeller or Perry. Even worse against Perry since White neutralizes Tesarri in a dual meet. I think besides the Fab 4 of Monroeville you have 3 or 4 kids with a winning record including state qualifier Johnson at 125.

Monroeville could compete in just about any tournament they enter in because of the heavy points that the Fab 4 would rack up however in a dual they don't stand as much of a shot.

Ironically Moeller could be knocked out of the top 5 this year at state as they don't have many high placers this year. Corrill, Harger and Quehl represent the best chances for top 5 placing the rest are a crap shoot for Moeller. Moeller's saving grace at the state tournament will be the number they get out with thanks to a weak district, put them at Perry and there numbers go down drastically.

Dan:

About White. I saw him wrestle up a weight last Thursday against Mattingly from Lake, who I think is a fantastic wresler, and totally dominate the match. He was about 4 inches shorter and a fair amount lighter but lightning quick.
