Discussion Topic: Cleveland radio hypes this Sunday's Ohio State-Michigan dual
Steve Lester added to this discussion on February 6, 2008
Late yesterday afternoon a fellow I was talking to told me that he heard, on his way into work, Mark "Munch" Bishop discussing this coming Sunday's Ohio State-Michigan dual during his sports talk program (airs 3-6 on WKNR). I expressed my surprise that WKNR would "push" wrestling, or any high school sport, during it's drive time programming (as opposed to a Sat morning) and told him Bishop's competition on WTAM (Mike Trivissano) would seem to be the one to entertain that idea.
Not to be outdone, Trivisanno had Tom Ryan on the air this afternoon for a live (phone) interview to "talk up" the coming dual. It was great stuff. Trivisanno is a friend of wrestling and hosts an annual show featuring local high school personalities. There is a link over on the Ohio Wrestling site to today's broadcast.
I would imagine that press releases are sent to stations as a matter of course, but for whatever reason, this time they were acted upon. Hopefully the Plain Dealer will not get left behind, and will devote some print space to the build up (considering the local rooting interests).
Can you imagine this happening a couple of years ago?

That is pretty amazing. The OSU site is warning of a possible traffic problem because there is a BB game at the Schott. at 1 pm (Indiana?). I figure I can park by the Stadium and walk across the street if it's that crowded. This might draw more than the Iowa match???

Listen to the broadcast and hear the dream!

No sarcasm allowed Bob.
The PD has very important articles to write about the foul shooting technique of some CSU basketball player. (True--the day before Iowa wrestled at Ohio State in front of over 4000 fans, this was the article they wrote).

Keep in mind OSU is not in Cleveland, a small minority of NE Ohioans have any affiliation with OSU, and while significant this is not a national championship meet. I would think the PD has more of an obligation to the local teams than to one 140 miles away.
Obviously the people on here are wrestling fans, but let's be a bit objective and see it how the PD must.

Mr Sommers,
i wish that was true, but imo unless its the Browns, Cavs or Indians there isn't much local coverage to speak of, esp high schools.
PD had buyouts last year and didnt replace any who left from sports other than bringing in Terry Pluto to write even more about the Browns, Cavs and Indians. Scholastic reporters like Eddie Dwyer and Bob Migra who left were Not replaced. -----Now i hear another buyout is coming at the PD.
NEWS, hot off the press:
.....
Garrett Scott
has won the wrestle off with once high ranked Strayer at 141 pounds for Penn St, and Scott will start the remainder of the season.
.....IRONMAN just got a commitment from
Mt Carmel Illinois
, once a powerhouse now on the way back up the ladder under coach Erwinski who wrestled at Northwestern U.
Mt Carmel Alumni include Joe Williams and his brother T.J., both NCAA champs at U of Iowa. IRONMAN had Illinois' 2 best teams Montini & Glenbard North return this season and new entry Mt Carmel keeps the Illinois pipeline open.

I remember Mount Caramel when they came to the MidWest Classic in the mid-90's. Very tough kids. Nice addition if they can climb to the once-elevated status.

Bob, I am not at all saying the PD is a quality newspaper, or has a quality sports section. Far from it. I get most of my local news from the News-Herald.
But to expect them to give much coverage to a regular season event 140 miles away is not reasonable. I doubt if the News-Herald will give it much coverage, or the Beacon-Journal.
