Discussion Topic: Maggie's thoughts on OSU v. Michigan and HS v. College
Maggie Lamantia added to this discussion on February 12, 2008

After my first college wrestling match last weekend, of course I have about ten thousand things running through my head. It was worth having to miss my high school League tournament, and meeting Coach Ryan and getting to talk with all the wrestlers was FAB. So, for discussion purposes, I have posted below the biggest differences I've noticed between high school and college wrestling. enjoy. :0)

1. College coaches are much more intimidating toward the ref.
I saw much more "that's a stalling call. that's a stalling call. why aren't you calling that?" from the coaches. Also, having both coaches on the same side of the mat can be good if there is a discrepency, but also baddd since the ref is getting it from both sides at the same time.

2. The concept of riding time fascinates me.
I don't really have much more to say about it. I loved watching it count up....reversal...count down...count up. It was just flat out sa-weet! =)

3.College wrestlers have much better reflexes.
Is it a rule in college that when the wrestlers are in the referee's position that the ref blows the whistle as soon as the top person's hand touches the bottom person's elbow? I think it is. We should initiate this into high school! I noticed (I think it was) Lance on bottom, and as soon as the ref blew the whistle, he had already jumped and both his feet were right under him. So many times in high school our coaches have yelled "right off the whistle!" and nothing happens! But, there were lots of cautions called Sunday afternoon as well, because the bottom man would jump the gun.

In College.... Everyone is good.
Obviously. especially in D1, your varsity wrestlers are going to be multiple state champs, multiple multiple district champs, and all that hoorah. At our dual tournaments (BG, Napoleon Gold Medals), by looking at our line ups compared to the other teams, one can almost guess which ones we're going to give up. But, on the college level, I've heard it said that "every match is like the state finals." and I completely agree. Everyone is good.

All in all, my trip to Columbus was aMAzing! I loved the campus and am reeeally thinking about going there. However, missing the good 'ol NWOAL leagues was a bummer. I was getting text updates half-hourly. And, even better, some random person from PH asked our boys where Maggie was because they read my posts online! COOL!

well, if you're out there, PH man, I hope you enjoy this! and everyone else! hahah. Let's hear yours as well! :0)

I think your observations are right on Maggie. A couple of other differences you may have noticed.

-Mat wrestling, particularly from the top position is much more advanced from a physical and technical standpoint. Guys are much more adept and breaking down and keeping pressure on their opponent, as well as moving fluently from one pinning combination to another. It should not come as a shock that this is generally the area which freshman have the most trouble adjusting to. Those wrestlers whose mat skills are already advanced coming out of hs generally are competitive against top competition quicker (think Lance Palmer).

-Scrambling has become an art form that has progressed to the point that a college match would be unregognizable to someone who hasn't whatched the sport in 15-20 years. It seems like no takedown is a sure thing no matter how deep the penatration. OSU National Champ and former assistant coach Mitch Clark was a pioneer in this area, and current Buckeye J Jaggers is a fantastic scrambler.

Interesting comments.

Coaches are more intimidating! LOL...Not really...they seem that way but a good referee knows the rules, and the criteria for every situation better than coach's do. Remember, the referee has no dog in the fight so he is merely making calls based on what he sees straight from his eyes to his brain. A coach tends to see things from his eyes, then to his heart, and then to his brain. Nothing wrong with that...thats his job.

Riding time..used to be used in high school may years ago. In fact...the rule used to be, even in college that for every minute you had, you got an extra point.

Referee Position..actually....believe it or not...the rule is that the top wrestler must place the palm of his hand on the navel first, then the other on the elbow,,then...PAUSE! I am shocked that more referees aren't allowing the pause. the NCAA rules committee wants a pause to avoid false starts and running starts. I hope this same rule goes to high school wrestling as well.

In college everyone is good....the "pyramid" sure gets smaller doesn't it.

Scott--one observation based on your comments.

I watched video of Mark Coleman wrestling Mike Davies for the national championship. Coleman shoots a low single with his head outside late in the match. Davies falls over and gives up the two. It proves the difference.

Now--that shot would have begun a long scramble that probably would have favored Davies. When I watched the video, it shocked me that there was no counter.
