This Friday at 7:05 in Kent the Golden Flashes will battle the Chippewas for first place in the MAC. I know we started talking about this match on another thread, but I felt that it deserved its own. Here are the matchups.
125: Nic Bedelyon (Kent State) v. #18 Luke Smith (Central Michigan)
133: #19 Dan Mitcheff (Kent State) v. Connor Beebe (Central Michigan)
141: #18 Drew Lashaway (Kent State) v. #11 Eric Kruger (Central Michigan)
149: Clint Sponseller (Kent State) v. Nate Holt (Central Michigan)
157: Sli Bostelman (Kent State) v. Tyler Grayson (Central Michigan)
165: #13 Kurt Gross (Kent State) v. #9 Trevor Stewart (Central Michigan)
174: Chris Estep (Kent State) v. #4 Brandon Sinnott (Central Michigan)
184: #20 Eric Chine (Kent State) v. #4 Christian Sinnott (Central Michigan)
197: Mike Blackwell (Kent State) v. #4 Wynn Michalak (Central Michigan)
285: #12 Jermail Porter (Kent State) v. #9 Bubba Gritter (Central Michigan)
On paper it appears that the Golden Flashes are the underdogs. Alot of exciting match ups especially Gross v. Stewart and Porter v. Gritter.

Although I'm a fan Kent State (by defualt...they're in Ohio...), I have to say Trevor Stewart is the man. I got to see him wrestle up at a Toledo tournament...MONEY!!!
D-O-M-I-N-A-T-E-D the field with one hand. Honestly! He was recovering from torn tendons in his hand. He had a covering over it and didn't use it - as much aas possible. I think he had three pins in about :21. Then in the finals he teched the kid that kept trying to hand fight. It proved to only make him angrier.

By default? Kent has made great strides! I know that they are not OSU and never will be, but look at that program compared to OU; not to mention old teams like Toledo, and MU, who don't have a program anymore. It is a program that has seen rock bottom and is now rising to occasions. That program is much like many Ohio wrestlers: you get bucked off the horse but always jump back on. My hat is off to JA and the kids/ people who believe in the program and what it stands for. I do not root for KSU by default, it is my choice.

It is not a slight on the Golden Flashes. They are in Ohio so therefore I'm a fan. The same goes for CSU, Cincinnati and Akron. I'm not sure what to do with the Rockets of Toledo!!!
And I do applaud the strides they have made. I think they get an AA within the next three years.
I know if they get one this year...I'll be there to see it!!!!!!!! St. Louis or bust, baby!

I think Kent has a decent shot in this match--not a great one but about a 30% chance of winning--which isn't bad considering CMU is ranked #4/5 nationally.
The key is going to be to win the first four wt classes--which they can do. Then, Gross has to beat Stewart. Working in Kent's favor is the fact the match is at home. Also, Kent wrestled CMU very tough last year. Obviously, they're not intimidated in the least by the Chippewas. I think Kent will wrestle hungry and contest each bout. Wish I could be there...
As an aside, Kent will have at least one AA this season. Gross, Bedelyon, Mitcheff or Lashaway...at least one of them is going to do it.
