I sent this to a group of friends...
I think if we were to break down responsibility by percentage of ownership/responsibility, it might look something like this...
EMU: 85% (must be biggest promoter of program and sport)
MAC: 10% (must desire teams to be competitive for conference's sake)
NCAA: 5% (WAKE UP!)
Thoughts?

Hits home for me. Liberty dropped their program (1st time) in LATE July when i had one year left. Too late to change - so I was done.
Now, this happens to all the EMU guys and specifically to Burg grad Tanner Smith. Luckily he is only 1 year into classes so not to far into a program AND it is early so opportunities to move will be available.

From yappi:
"Terrible news.
It seems like when these things happen it is usually proceeded by a recent AD change. Sure enough in this case too. AD on the job less than a year and a decision to drop wrestling is made. I looked up the guys bio and his previous administrative experiences were at non wrestling sponsoring schools (Mississippi State, Eastern Carolina, San Diego State) with the exception of his first job for one year as a online ticket supervisor in 1999 at Fresno State.
It will be interesting to see if there is a spike in resources for their baseball program. "
Interesting observation about newness of AD.

I emailed the AD, Scott Wetherbee. Here is his response.
"Brady,
I appreciate your e-mail and agree with you that it is indeed a shame that we had to eliminate these 4 sports. I certainly didn't come here with the intent to do this. Athletics was forced into a $2 million budget cut and had no option but to eliminate sports. Also, I understand the ramifications of what is being done to these student athletes. 25 years ago my sport was eliminated and I too was crushed, angry, and disappointed. I had to transfer to another institution. These decisions weren't just made haphazardly. I truly want what is best for our student athletes and will do whatever I can to support them through this very difficult transition.
SW"
I find the use of "no option" interesting because I'm sure they went to all these programs, informed them of what they were being required to do ($2 mil budget cut) to see if they all could come up with a solution.
I found this in an article ( https://hailstatebeat.wordpress.com/2016/11/01/on-scott-wetherbee-msus-new-interim-athletic-director/ ) about him.
"When he was a sophomore, the school announced in the fall that the following baseball season would be their last. Because of Title IX restrictions, they were cutting the baseball program.
“I got frustrated by that,†Wetherbee said. “That was a turning point for me. Title IX wasn’t meant to cut opportunities for men. It was meant to give opportunities to women. Unfortunately, a lot of people ended up cutting sports.â€
He remembered thinking at the time that if he were in a position to do so, he would have fought as hard as he could to keep programs from being cut and keep student-athletes from losing opportunities."
I wonder how hard the fight was.

I also emailed him but have yet to receive a response.
Same old story. New AD going to be a hero and resurrect or heavily invest in a shitty football program and the first step is to cut else where.
Look at these figures of football coaching salaries (it is a spreadsheet so you can separate by conference) and convince me why football should be a sacred cow in some of these smaller conferences? Appear to be major cash drains.
http://sports.usatoday.com/NCAA/salaries/
And for those that will bring up TV revenue, here is another article saying that the MAC schools each get about $850,000. You do the math......

I could be wrong but I think this is being soearheqded by EMU’s President. He did same thing at previous University he was at.
All EMU wrestlers have been fully released to talk to any coach. Ideally this can get reversed but that’s a long shot without a donor(s) ponying up enough money to fund entire program moving forward. I also hope those that do want to trqnsfer can find a place to go. If I’m a guy who just signed there, I’m finding out who is going to be the coach at Little Rock. You’d resdhirt ‘18-19 season and be ready to go when the first year of their program in ‘19-‘20. It may be best opportunity to get same or more $. Same maybe even for some young gu S that redshirt this past year.
If I’m a coach that really want a few of them, I out a pckage deal together. Instant boost to your program.

The AD did return my email. He claims to be an ex wrestler. I mentioned that football appears to be a major financial drain and he claimed that they had $6 million dollars in revenue from the football program. I didn't want to call the guy a liar but I would love to see the breakdown on that revenue stream. If they drop football they would have to drop even more programs.

Great article about Lowell coach refusing to let EMU recruit his football players now. Very publically beating up the administration of EMU."

The mis-information that has been put out by the EMU Athletic Dept is quite astounding. Their "reason" why the massive mistakes in expenditure reporting was given was laughable.
http://www.mlive.com/news/ann-arbor/index.ssf/2018/04/emu_reported_wrestling_expense.html
Looks like the 20th of this month will be the final decision concerning if the program can be saved or not -- but all indications point to the guys needing new college homes next year.
