By pulling Assad's RS and sticking him in against IU; he said we are wrestling the best line up possible. He has Wilcke and Brands at that weight. They have the talent and more importantly the momentum. Built a team around Lee in short order.
Burn the boats, we are not looking back. We are conquering right now.

I agree. Sometimes in sports you can't play it safe or think about the future, you have to go for it now.
OT: Rex- I'm the skinny old guy from UA that you met at the Columbus State health fair! :-)

Tom Ryan's influence. No question in my mind that a lot of coaches who previously redshirted as a matter of habit are re-thinking that strategy.

At least three factors: the chance of the wrestler suffering a season-ending or even career-ending injury; the ease of transferring if things are not going as envisioned; the reality of recruiting and the need for programs these days to keep upgrading--if not stacking--every weight class.
You're far from obligated to dance for four years with the one you came to the party with!
Looking back, I think that's what happened with Heinselman last year. Because of the size issue, Ryan realized he was never going to get four years of elite, AA-level wrestling out of him. Sooner or later an upgrade had to happen. So might as well burn the shirt.

In my opinion this was a mistake. I love Assad and I think he has a bright future. However I don’t see a clear separation between him and Wilke. Wilke was a round of 12 last year if I recall correctly, what is the upside to pull Assad’s red shirt? Unless Assad finishes top four, I think this was a mistake. Having said that, I respect them going all in to win a title.

Brands must see a clear difference between Assad, Wilke and Nelson Brands if he made this move. That's the only way it makes sense.

But results show minimal is any difference..

Then why do it? I'm going to assume Brands is being logical. I get your point. I'm just saying that Assad must be the dominant 184 in the room at the very least. Unless Tom Brands has just gone a bit crazy.

Iowa has an amazing history in wrestling and a rabid fan base. It’s been many years since their last championship. Finally the favorite again, but, as we know, PSU is formidable. They have shown that they are all in by burning Brooks redshirt. Imagine that due to injury or upset the Hawks lose the championship to the Nits by a point or two knowing their best option at 184, Assad, who may have scored those points, stayed in redshirt. Brands is not going to let that happen.

Hank - I understand why he did it, and agree that Assad must be substantially better in the room.
My contention was only that it feels like minimal upside.
Historical context says you do it when you think a guy can win a title (or compete for one).
Assad has 3 losses on the season:
Jones from Grandview (NAIA?)
Broderson from Iowa State (37th on Wrestlestat)
Lujan from NIU (pretty one-sided 4-0 score)
My question would be - if you're going all in, why not bring Eierman out of Oly RS (he ain't making the Olympic team) to replace Murin?
Murin and Wilcke are the same guy; R12 probable with low AA ceiling.
Either way, I hope Brands is right. I'm out on PSU and want anyone but Cael and his disciples lifting the trophy.
