Do you think there will be any drop off in attendance due to public concerns around coronavirus? Will any of the lead organizations discourage attendance? Any risk of events being postponed/canceled?

The fear of corona virus is real and having an impact on my ability to purchase product. While much of the fear is unfounded, things will get worse before they get better. At least in terms of public reaction.

The virus is real but perhaps the fear is even more real.
It's not a garden-variety flu, but it's also not the bubonic plague.
What would be helpful is a nationally appointed scientist/doctor backed by other experts, calmly and rationally giving factual information about what it is and what it isn't. Not politicians politicizing even this.
Yes, Shawn, IMO there will be a drop-off in attendance but perhaps that's a good thing. All experts agree that it's best to avoid crowds during a pandemic: it's safer for you and helps stop the spread of the virus.

FWIW- The Arnold Classic has been cancelled for most spectators this weekend in Columbus.
Yes I know it is a larger event on the grand scale of things, but something to still be of note.

Mike Dewine listened to information from reputable professionals and did what he felt was in the best interest of the public.
Admirable.

Totally agree. It's not rocket science: epidemiology is a cornerstone of public health, and one of its basic tenets is DON'T GATHER IN LARGE CROWDS DURING AN EPIDEMIC!
The Arnold is just one medium-sized event in one medium-sized city. Money speaks and Big Money speaks loudest: despite all the publicity, concern, fear and scientific evidence we are NOT seeing the NBA or MLB banning spectators!

He has always been one of the most pragmatic public officials in Ohio history. It may seem an easy call but how many politicians actually do what they should? He also has been quite open minded about many issues. He is a very bright man.
He probably would have made scrappy 125 pounder.

at risk of being criticized i will present another view.
All these potential cancellation of events -- or at least no fans allowed-- why not let the INDIVIDUAL decide whats best for him and his family instead of Govt dictating it?
The elderly and weak should stay away, they know that, but for others let the individual and family head decide. Life must go on just like post 9/11
there will be serious implications for business if there are massive Govt decrees about who can go on, who cant attend, under what conditions. Govt will decide the winners and losers (as Govt often does anyway).
As the stock market is telling us the coronavirus scare is having major impact on our economy already. A dozen years of prosperity in the country can disappear. Mass closing will exacerbate that.
On a large scale It can cause bankrupcies and job loss in a number of industries. Expect unintended consequences and major ripple effects. Airlines, concerts, movie theaters, all sporting events, restaurants, tour buses, casinos, hotels.
The Fed Govt dug us out after the Housing and Bank crisis in 2008 using the Fed Reserve & Treasury to implement what are now record low interest rates and massive fiscal stimulus to get the economy going.
the interest rate tool is no longer available, we are near zero in the Federal funds and discount rates right now.
this closings thing is a serious decision -- too serious to let Govt decide it alone.

Bob: That's an interesting perspective. Here's the other. People choose to disregard the risk and as a result the virus spreads even faster and with more devastating results. The question becomes: why didn't gov't do more to keep us safe?
Nobody wants govt interference until they need it.
But your point is understood. This could devastate business all over the world and my tiny little meat emporium is no exception.

Hank - I’m not calling to be reckless in our actions to purposefully put others in danger, but good hygiene takes away most risk (at least what I’ve read).
In your statement, for me, lies a huge societal problem. And not what you would say/do but you what said others would say, “why didn’t gov’t do more to protect me.” We have become a people who fail to take much personal responsibility for our actions and instead pass our “safety” onto others. I decried it when the Republican lead congress passed the Patriot Act. I, like Thomas Jefferson, prefer dangerous freedom to peaceful slavery.

BINGO! ....life has risk, no greater than when i get out on the highway daily. Govt cant mitigate all risks without taking freedoms and even then risks prevail. (see China).
the Greater risk right now, in the big picture, is too much Govt making us a nation of people sitting on our couch waiting for our "Bernie check".
