Winter athletes will not get an extra year. However, spring athletes will have an extra year of eligibility. Thoughts?

Definitely stinks for the athletes, but probably the most appropriate outcome. Far too many moving parts that would have wide ranging impacts potentially for multiple years. You don’t make short-sided decisions that benefit a few that have long range implications that could potentially impact the masses. Just my two cents.

I agree with Jared.
To give back what was lost to 330 D1 athletes, how many others would be affected?
Then add in all the D2 and D3 wrestlers plus men and women BB players, hockey players, gymnasts, and whatever other sports I don't even watch.
I can't begin to imagine all the issues that would come up downstream with red-shirts and scholarships.
Better to accept the fact that, for reasons beyond our control, the end of the season was lost. Time to move forward.

Agree that this decision was probably the best that could have been made considering all aspects of the situation that needed to be considered. Definitely a sad and unfortunate ending to the season for the student athletes in most of the winter sports programs, in particular, the seniors. But the fact is, is that some of those athletes had already completed their season, and all of them were able to complete 90 to 95% of those seasons. I think it’s also important to keep this all in the proper perspective. I just got home yesterday from a short hospital stay. I consider myself absolutely fortunate and feel for all the healthcare workers I came into contact with and those patients that will not have the positive outcome I had and may never go home again. We are going through a life changing time for so many. I enjoy and am thankful for this forum. I wish you all good health.

I think it's saying that the 2020-2021 season will not count towards a year of eligibility. "This rule allows athletes to compete without the possibility of having their season cut short due to COVID-19 and losing that year of eligibility." It doesn't give a year back to athletes who were seniors in 2019-2020.

That is true that seniors from the 2019-2020 season (Moore, Pletcher, etc) won't get their year back, but it will put a guy who RSd last year in a unique position, right? ***
IF
*** I have it correct...
Randy Wrestler started as a true freshman in the 17-18 season (AA-8th), and again as a true sophomre in 18-19 (AA-5th). RSd during the 19-20 season, and will now get a "free" year this year. Let's say he finishes 6th at NCAAs. Since this year (20-21) doesn't count against his eligibility, he'd be available in 21-22 AND 22-23, correct?
I'm not sure if that applies to one kid across the entire D-I landscape, but man that'd be crazy if it did!!!

That's how I'm reading it. To quote the article: "All in all, this is great news for college wrestlers and puts some wrestlers back on track to chase history. Those like the aforementioned Lee who is aiming to become the fifth wrestler to win four NCAA titles. It could also allow us to see some record-breaking performances. For example, Yianni Diakomihalis and Mekhi Lewis could now become five-time NCAA champions." It would be pretty crazy.
It also mentions of course that it could screw things up scholarship-wise.

Great news for athletes, programs, and fans. I’m curious how this impacts equity across the D1 landscape. If the scholarships don’t count towards the allotment, but the cost is left up to the school to fulfill the financial obligation I have to think that those programs with deep pockets are going to be much better off. Don’t get me wrong, I’m ecstatic for the sport and it’s athletes. I just see this as yet another hurdle for smaller programs to overcome.

It is crazy to me that they didn't give the seniors from last year the option of competing this year.

And equally crazy that it gives those who redshirted last year a free year.
It's not hard to say, "can only play/compete in 4 NCAA Championships".

It will be interesting to see if this has any effects on recruits decision to attend a certain school.
On PSU boards someone mentioned Facudo the #1 170 in the country is committed to PSU but now that Starocci and Beard could be there for the next 4-5 years will he still end up at PSU knowing he might not have a spot.
