Discussion Topic: Flo: Tate Orndorff to Ohio State
Drew Taylor added to this discussion on April 3, 2020

Flowrestling is reporting heavyweight national qualifier Tate Orndorff is transferring to Ohio State. Orndorff competed the past two seasons for Utah Valley and was 18-4 this past year, finishing a somewhat disappointing fifth in the Big 12.

Notable opponents he beat include Jordan Wood, Tanner Hall and Josh Hokit.

This is a nice pickup, but is Orndorff even assured of cracking the lineup with Gary Traub around for another year?

Left unsaid is Chase Singletary is moving down to 197.

I’d say this was the best case scenario for the Bucks at heavyweight. In addition to Wood (AA) and The Fresno State All American Orndorf also owns an 8-2 win over Singletary as well as multiple wins over the Iowa St 285 Gremmel. He did have a sub par Big 12 but did enter is the number 1 overall seed. He’s only a sophomore and has two years of eligibility left. His loses at the 2019 NCAAs were 10-2 to national champ Anthony Cassar and Multiple AA Hemida from Maryland. He is the highest ranked sophomore not named Gable Steveson or Mason Parris. No one else in the top ten would realistically transfer outside of Orndorf. This addition is an absolute get. You get a fringe AA threat at heavy weight and it buys you two more years to recruit a stud replacement. Traub is a great story, and was absolutely a solid heavyweight. In my opinion Orndorf is an upgrade athletically. Who’s to say Traub doesn’t want to graduate this year? He’s a RS Junior. This absolutely adds to the needed depth at Heavy and 197. Orndorf, Singletary, Traub, And Hoffman should provide solid contributions to the lineup. OSU was not going to recruit a suitable replacement in one year, or perhaps eden for the 21-22 season. I like the addition.

Traub and Orndorff will battle at 285. Singletary will almost certainly drop to 197. What happens to Gavin Hoffman?

Orndorff has two years remaining too, I think. Doesn’t appear Hoffman is in the Buckeyes plans (unless Singletary isn’t dropping down?). There are going to be so many lineup questions next year. Is Hayes definitely finished? What weight is Echemendia? If he and Sasso are 149/157 then who goes 141? Is it a given that Kharchla takes 165 from Smith? I feel like (but could be totally wrong), that Romero and Smith are pound for pound better than Rocky, but would one of them be big enough to be better than him at 184? Is D’Emilio an option at 133?

This should be a solid team, but with how top heavy NCAA’s will be next year I could see 6 AA’s and still not place top four.

The depth of this team creates lots of uncertainty surrounding starters. Perhaps even more than this past year you could make arguments at every single weight. Ironically Malik might be the only guaranteed weight at 125. If D’Emilio doesn’t go 133 I don’t see where he would ever fit in the lineup. He looks awfully big for that weight as well. Another year removed for Decatur can’t bode well for maintaining 133. Besides that you have the state champ out of Iowa who redshirted last year. 141 could be Decatur, D’Emilio, or Kiner. I think Decatur might still benefit from a RS, but would do well to slide up. Bucks would have a blue chip here either way. 149 would seem to be Enchemendia’s ideal weight, but obviously Sasso would probably dictate here. The Cuban could still RS but that seems unlikely. There were rumors last year that perhaps Sasso could beef up to 157, and Enchemendia certainly looks physically massive enough to make the larger weight as well. Not sure if Kiner is stilll a player here or not. I agree on Karchla at 165, and I think Romero is an AA at 174. Smith is the odd man out. Although I could see a scenario where he splits some time at either 165 or 174. Rocky at 84. Not sure who lands 197. Obviously we’ve all heard about Singletary dropping, but I’m not shocked if Hoffman gets the nod. I really think Gavin could be substantially better at this larger weight class where his style plays a little better.
