I realize Tom Ryan isn’t leaving soon but maybe he has 5-10 more years. List coaches who you would like to see step in as the next coach in that time frame from inside and outside the program
Inside
Jaggers is an obvious one as he is the assistant
Humphrey-looks amazing as he has developed quite a few guys up in jersey
Stieber-four time champion, greatest Ohio state wrestler
Outside- some younger guys who will be be retired by then from competition
Cox-great guy with now an Ohio rtc tie
Burroughs-one of the greatest freestylers of all time
Dake- another obvious great both college and international
Not sure if these guys even want to be coaches but I’m sure would do great if they wanted to be. Ohio state will always be a top tier job as they have so much in state talent and a re a national brand. Other than penn state or Iowa they will be able to get any coach I think that they want. Even Cael didn’t have that much success at Iowa state. But give Cael penn state it isn’t fair.

Thoughts?

Jaggers is the natural successor if he stays, and I think there is value to that. That said, I also want Tervel around the program for the long run. I think there is a lot he brings to the table both in terms of technique and the intangibles that he brings to the table.

I wonder how long Bo will be around. There has been chatter about Micah taking over at Graham/the club in some time, but I don't know if Bo will do this with him or want to stay in the college game for some time.

Will Logan's club take off and keep him out of the college coaching ranks? I am curious to see how he and David Taylor's club coaching careers go.

I have been super impressed by Reece, but I think he has kind of found a niche and wouldn't be surprised to see him get looks by the national team in the near future.

So assuming Jaggers would be the HC, I would make Tervel the associate HC to keep him around. I think he will be a very in demand candidate in the near future. He takes care of the upper weight spot. I have a hunch that Logan ends up on staff and would love that. He is a lighter weight guy. I think Bo stays in Columbus for a little while for the last spot.

Good discussion. J would be the obvious choice but like you said, TR isn't going anywhere fast. If Jaggers has head coaching aspirations he will probably have to go elsewhere, which seems unlikely unless it's a top job. All the guys mentioned are intriguing, but it's important to remembers that being an elite college/international wrestler does not necessarily translate into having the skill set to be a D1 head coach. I love the talk about Humphrey and it would be great if they could find a way to get him back in Columbus, either at the RTC or on the college staff. Cox is intriguing because he is so smart and such a good communicator in addition to being a World Champ. I remember when Russ left a lot of us wanted it to be Tommy (who was very young at the time) or someone with Ohio connections but ultimately most of the top candidates ended up being guys who were established as elite D1 coaches at other programs (Ryan, Borrelli, Cody).

I read a book not too long ago where it talked about the pattern of company founders trying to anoint their offspring as their successors. I believe the example the book gave was the line of sons that became the CEOs of Annheiser Busch. It’s similar to an absolute monarchy where rule gets passed down through the bloodline. The point that was made was that successful leadership typically likes to anoint their successor, and many times they make these choices with their own legacy in mind. Urban Meyer pretty much co-signed on Ryan Day’s appointment as a coach. I mean when in the history of Ohio State football has their not been a massive nationwide search for a replacement? Look no further than Coach Day.
In all likelihood TR will probably want J as his successor, and ultimately there is a high probability that he will be the successor, and has rightfully earned that opportunity. But what is the likelihood that the absolutely best coach to take over the program just happens to be the assistant coach of your program? You mean to tell me that outside of Cael, Tom Ryan is number 2, Jaggers is 3, and then everyone else falls in line? Let me be clear, I’d love Jaggers as the head coach, and the Buckeyes would more than likely continue to be an elite program. But if we take a lesson from corporate America the best successor for the program is more than likely not a part of the program currently. Just a little contrarian point of view.

some good points Jared...however i want to make one point.

the advantage in hiring a highly regarded Ohio St asst is that not much if anything has to change from the superior operation Urban Meyer or Tom Ryan established. ... Continuity. As in the Ryan Day case.

a new head coach coming from the outside to Ohio St would likely make changes just because of his ego, his own experiences and he wants to be his own man... Might work, might not.

Now if we are replacing a underachieving coach, then of course major changes will be welcome.

Tom Ryan is in his early 50s and has been a head DI wrestling coach for 25 seasons. That's half of his life.

Maybe he gets burned out and moves into an administrative role with OSU athletics. He's a heckuva leader with talents that transcend the wrestling room. Then again, maybe he's invigorated by Penn State's dominance and decides to coach another 10 seasons. I hope he sticks around forever.

The list of potential replacements changes every year, but right now it appears the pool of coaches ready to take over a marquee program is low. When Ohio State parted ways with Russ Hellickson, there were several guys having success at small D-I programs - Tom Ryan at Hofstra, Tom Borelli at Central Michigan, Tom Brands at Virginia Tech, Terry Brands at Chattanooga. Then came Jim Andrassy at Kent State and Pat Popolizio at Binghamton. Chris Bono at South Dakota State.

A new wave is still forming. Keith Gavin at Pitt and Jason Borelli at Stanford have done nice things at non-traditional powers. Cary Kolat could continue to climb.

But it's hard to see many candidates being a better fit at OSU than Jaggers. He's the total package of wrestling credentials, coaching credentials and relatability.

Sheesh. Wouldn't surprise me to see Tom Ryan coach another 10-15 years. That guy has energy. Not even 1 foot in the grave yet!

Who do you all think is going to inherit Nick Lecklider's fortune when he dies? Kidding :)

TR has reached legend status, as far as I’m concerned, he can coach as long as he wants to. Jaggers would be the obvious choice, but I would think that would all depend on how long TR stays, I’m sure J has gotten offers
