I had not heard of this kid previously, but that’s why Anthony Ralph gets paid. To uncover what others cannot. After some research here is what I found...
-88lb freshman, didn’t start until sophomore year.
-7th place finish at 2018 iron man
-2019 double junior aged champ at Fargo in both styles (106 for freestyle).
-2020 Cali stare champ.
-Currently ranked #4 at 113.
-Ranked as a mid 30s overall for the class of 2021.
What does this mean?
The Figueroa ship has probably sailed. You don’t bring this kid in from out of state, and from the same state and graduating class if you still believe your going to get Figs.
He’s small, 5’3’’ junior in high school wrestling 106. This is smaller than Malik was. He will absolutely have to have a redshirt.
Although he fits the bill as a relatively solid get for a 125lb prospect. He’s absolutely in the same stratosphere, recruiting wise, as a Malik, Nikko Triggas, or Jacob Decatur. I feel like he was further down the list behind Richie, Stevo, and one or two others .
I think it would be disingenuous for me to pass judgment on any recruit coming in during our current hold. At first glance this seems to fit the vein of Buckeye recruiting. A solid out of state pickup with national notoriety. He fits a need and has both high folk and freestyle accomplishments. Size is a concern. Overall, a very good (but not enormously great) pickup, IMO.

Read the article. It says the plan is for him to be a 133. I think that is with the intention of Richie figs being a 125. They must think he is gonna grow. Think this is good news on Richie figs not bad. They must have their eyes set on someone else being the 125.

Unclear if the writer has inside knowledge of OSU pegging Gonzales for 133 but my guess is it’s speculation. Hard to believe someone who is slated to wrestle 113 in his senior season would not be ticketed for 125.

Drew, I was thinking the same thing. Yes it looks nice he is ranked #4 in the country, but at that weight you see mainly Fresh & sophomores. I hope this ranking isn't an indication that Gonzales may "bully" other wrestlers around because he might be a bit more mature than most at this weight and strength could be an obvious advantage.
It's indicative this kid reminds us a lot about Malik with the size issue, and with 2 years of starting on Malik's resume, the book is still out on him, mostly because of size.
It's nice OSU got another solid recruit for 2021 and at a weight that's very thin. I'm sure rooting for the kid. let's keep recruiting.

People grow at different rates. David Taylor wrestled 112 as a junior in high school. At one point I was worried that Nato wouldn't be big enough for 125. Malik's lack of growth has people concerned but I think he's the exception not the rule. California State champ and double Fargo champ suggests that this is an elite talent.

What is Malik's walking around weight? Does anybody on here with inside information understand why he can't put on the weight? Seems like he should be able to put on 5 lb or more of muscle through lifting and training without losing any quickness or explosiveness, and actually might improve in those areas

Well then, I stand corrected. I’m curious who else is in the running. PSU always has to be a consideration. Richie would be a transcendent talent for both ASU and tOSU. With the current state of wrestling out west I’d have to assume wrestling in the Big Ten has to be somewhat of a draw.

Gonzales is a nice prospect. He's got great offense and he doesn't make mistakes. His mat wrestling is solid as well.
