Discussion Topic: 2020-2021 WIN Rankings are out

WIN Rankings are out and they have me thinking about the season. With the uncertainty around football, and by extension wrestling, anything to talk about is welcomed.
125 – Malik Heinselman – Jr. (NR)
Looking at the rankings, I believe Malik has wins over the following wrestlers:
#4 – Rayvon Foley (MSU) – In Freestyle, not folk;
#7 – Michael DeAugustino (NU);
#11 – Alex McCall (ISU)
#13 – Jack Medley (tsun) – 4 wins over Medley!;
#16 – Liam Cronin (NU);
#17 – Justin Cardani (IU) – 2 wins and an OT loss;
#19 – Pat McKee (MU) – 2 wins and a loss;
He has a loss to #6 Hildebrandt (CMU) in OT as well.
I see no reason, none at all, that Malik can’t be a top 15 or even top 10 wrestler. I hope his performance at the B1G tourney, with wins over McKee and Cardani, and even in a loss to Cronin where he had the lead with under 10 seconds to go, gives him some confidence to build from. He just needs to learn how to use his speed and quickness without getting into bad situations. Hopefully the light goes on (and some muscle too!)
133 – Jordan Decatur – So. (NR)
I’m not going to rehash the RS debate. It’s time to look to this year and see where Jordan stands. Jordan has no real great wins, Kramer is the closest, and some bad losses. He needs a bounce back year in the worst way. I don’t think he’s a 133 at the collegiate level, I think to be successful he would have to be at 141. Hopefully I’m wrong.
141 – Anthony Echemendia – Fr. (NR)
In looking at the current 141 pound rankings, I cannot wait to see how Echemendia competes. I would have no problem saying that I see him as a top 6 guy based on what I know and what (admittedly little) I’ve seen. I think he will have matches that make him look like a national champ and he will have matches where his folkstyle inexperience cost him against a “lesser” opponent. In the end, I think he is an AA and I wouldn’t be surprised if he was wrestling on Saturday night.
149 – Sammy Sasso – So. (#2)
The Bucks first ranked wrestler. He definitely has a shot to be a national champion, and I am hoping that he and Echemendia rolling together helps both of them. We all know Sasso has the offense, he just failed to pull the trigger too many times last year, becoming too reliant on his riding and defense. I would be extremely surprised if he were not an AA, and top 4 at that.
157 – Isaac Wilcox – (Fr)/Quinn Kinner – (So)/Elijah Cleary – (Sr)/Bryce Hepner – (Fr) – All NR
So, this is an interesting weight and I look forward to the wrestle offs. If I am handicapping this race, I am calling it as follows:
Kinner (-125)
Wilcox (+150)
Cleary (+250)
Hepner (+500)
I think any of the top 3 can be NQ with the top 2 having the potential to win some matches at the national tourney.
165 – Carson Kharchla – Fr. (NR)/Ethan Smith – Jr. (#9)
The back half of the lineup is in a state of flux because of roster additions, graduation and some uncertainty regarding weights. If Kharchla goes here I can see him top 5 at NCAAs this year. I think he manhandles Valencia and I think he can be as high as top 3.
With Smith, I also think he can take Valencia, but he is inconsistent enough that he could lose to guys ranked 5 spots lower. Either has a legit shot to be an AA, with Kharchla having an outside shot at a Saturday night spot.
174 – Kaleb Romero – Jr (#4)/Ethan Smith – Jr. (#9 @ 165)
Romero would have probably been an AA last year and I think he should be top 4 this year as well. Now, if Romero goes up to 184 and Smith slots in here, I would put him in around 12-15. The ability has always been there with Smith, it’s just a consistency issue.
184 – Rocky Jordan – So (#12)/Kaleb Romero – Jr (#4 @ 174)
Jordan was good in neutral, good on top and poor on bottom. If he can improve in all 3 positions then an AA finish is not out of question. If Romero slides up here, I give him a higher upside potential than Jordan and would slot him in around #7 (to replace Bonaccorsi, who I believe is going up to 197).
197 – Chase Singletary – So (NR)/Gavin Hoffman – So (NR)
I think Singletary would have been in contention for an AA finish at heavyweight last year. If he can handle the weight cut, then I think he can be an AA at 197 as well. If Hoffman gets the spot, hopefully he is back to the guy who was a top 10 recruit and had a very good RS year. Either should be a top 15 guy with outside AA potential.
285 – Tate Orndorff – JR (#6)/Gary Traub – Sr/Nicholas Boykin – Fr
Orndorff transferred in and I assume he will be the starter. However, I think OSU has 3 NQs at this weight. I think another year in the room will do nothing but help Boykin who has been a Greco guy for a few years. He will be in great position to take over after Orndorff leaves.
No one will forget the phenomenon that was Gas Tank Gary. His contribution to last year’s squad was so unexpected, and such a needed shot in the arm. I wish him well in his future endeavors, but I don’t see him getting a spot this year outside of a random match or two.
Overall – Ranked 7th as a team with 41.5 projected points.
I think that is low, with neither Echemendia or Singletary being ranked, and Kharchla being better than Smith. I would think that a top 5 finish is possible for the Bucks this year.

RBY just posted on Twitter that he's going up to 141. Honestly I think that helps Echemendia as RBY isn't the monster on top that Lee is, but it hurts Sasso as I would move Lee to #1 and move Sasso down a notch.
