From the OHSAA about the State Wrestling tournament. “Awards: Awards for the first 8 places will be awarded during Sunday, March 14. There will be no group podium presentations and no team point champions presentations.”
Incredible. This has to be changed. We just saw how the B1G handled podium presentations. The girl’s state tournament had them.
This is a simple fix.
Wear masks to the podium and while getting on. Have one official photographer take the picture and post on OHSAA website for parents to download. #Simplefix
Any emails to OHSAA would be awesome.
Thanks — and this is the first year in 18 years I didn’t have a SQ so this doesn’t even affect my team. It’s just not right. The kids deserve it.

Brady, I completely agree. Kids just getting handed medals walking off the mat at districts was so anticlimactic. At districts, however, it's fine. But it needs to change at state.
Not to mention the fact that at girls state there were podium pics with HUGE crowds snapping photos and I have not heard of any Covid outbreaks.

Correct. Want to take one guess who loaned the podium for the girls state tournament?

That’s who I did. My AD and HS Principal will be emailing also.
And the answer to the who loaned the podium? The OHSAA.

I've received a reply from the OHSAA. Main reason for no regular podium pictures is that no all the medalists are able to get back in for the 4th (finals) session. Finalists will be allowed vouchers for the finals and if you don't get a voucher, you can't be there.
I feel terrible for the kids who won't get that opportunity to stand on the podium with their fellow state placers and believe that solutions could have been made for a more normal awards ceremony. But maybe I'm wrong. I am often.
I greatly appreciate the work that has and is going into making the sites as special as possible. I spoke by phone to the D2 AD -- who seems like a great dude -- and he is working very hard to make it feel as much like the normal state tournament as possible. Even told me they are having a photographer there to take individual pics of each placer on their podium spot and then will photoshop them all together on the podium. A creative solution to a bad situation -- and I truly appreciate their creativity.

Am I correct in stating that the only kids leaving early after placement would be those from the Central District or even those who ride with their parents?
Those two scenarios could happen, but I'd venture to say that individuals who fell in either group would stick around if it meant standing on the podium.
I feel there is something larger going on.

If there is something larger, it's not been communicated.
I'd bet it'd be an incredibly small % (less than 5) that wouldn't stay for an opportunity to get on the podium during a normal awards ceremony.
Creative solutions to the capacity problem that have been shared with me -- house all placers in an Aux gym (that's only 84 kids) with streaming of the finals. That'd be a pretty cool atmosphere for those kids.
Could host an individual weight class in a classroom and stream the finals in there. They all physically wrestled each other so ...
Just thoughts.
What was communicated to me was that a podium will be at each site. A state placer may receive their medal from their coach on the podium for pics and that a photographer will be at each site. Unclear if it will be only that 1 placer on the podium at a time or if each group (3rd to 8th) will be on at once. I'm guess 1 at a time but am not sure.
What I am sure of is that nobody wants to be on the podium alone. There are a ton of creative minds out there that never got an opportunity to give ideas because they weren’t asked. The decision / plan was made and that’s it. #notgood

I was told full podium pictures aren’t possible because all the placers won’t be there. I was told by another coach that only those competitors actually wrestling in a session will be given direct access to ticket vouchers for that session — I take this to mean not all / any of the 3 - 8 placers will even be given the chance to purchase a ticket unless a finalist gives them a voucher. The rest have to wait - somewhere or go home with family/friends. Ugh. I get that there are gym capacity limits placed upon each school by the state (not the OHSAA) but there are solutions to this — if willing to be creative.
In related news, Olivia Shore was named the oHSWCA female wrestler of the year. In the press release it said, “Olivia became a 2x State Qualifier for the OHSAA Boy’s State Wrestling Championships. She will compete for a chance to stand on the podium at Marion Harding this weekend.” Stand on the podium — yes, it’s a huge deal and nobody wants to stand on a podium alone.
