Sasso wrestles the winner of a prelim match that has Andrew Alirez wrestling. He beat McKenna, Evan Henderson & Mitch McKee last year in FS. He better be terrible at mat wrestling or Sammy may have his hands full in his first match.

Alirez was the #2 seed at Big 12 but inj. defaulted through the tournament. Very dangerous, if healthy.

His default came in his first match at 1 sec. so he just stepped on the mat and took the inj. default.

I really like Romero’s draw. He has the best chance of any of the Bucks to make the semis. It’s not out of the realm of possibility that if he can get past the other Romero he can potentially right the ship against Storocci in the semis.

Other than Sammy, who is the tough draw.

My thoughts:
125 – Malik draws Howard from PSU. I don’t like that, as the more chances you give Cael to beat you, the better chance he has to do so. I think Malik wins this one again, but it will be a 5-3 match. After that, I like Malik’s chances against Lamont. He has one win against a qualifier, and lost to Teske. Plus, Lamont always seems to underperform in March. If Malik makes the semis, he has a puncher’s chance against Latona, who has 2 wins against Camacho (NC State), but no one else in the wrestlestat top 25. All in all, I think Malik gets his AA finish this year. Spencer Lee is your champ.
133 – None. Ugh. Fix over RBY.
141 – Glad D’Emilio made it in. Not glad he gets Rivera first match. After that loss, he ends up in the pig tail consi, and I think he wins that one. In the main consi bracket, he probably gets Claymont Mustang alum Lane Peters. I think D’Emilio can win that match, but he will have to get off bottom. Peters can ride. I’m thinking he’ll have Courtney (UVA) after that, and while a win wouldn’t shock me, I would be surprised. I think he goes 2-2. Rivera over Eirman in the finals.
149 – Yikes, a crap draw for Sammy. If Alirez is healthy, he’s a top 15 seed for sure. I hope he drops out. Ogunsanya is good and very athletic, but he’s aggressive, so I think Sammy gets by him but it will be a battle. Sammy should get by the quarters over Abas, but he’ll have either Lovett, Murin or Lewallen in the semis. He’s going to earn that trip to the finals, where I have him beating Mauller.
157 – Damn Cleary. One win over Licking and he’s in. Ugh. Deakin over Carr.
165 – I like Smith’s draw. The 6 would have been better, because I think Wentzel is good, but a little overrated there. I think Smith makes the quarters and then takes out Valencia with his pace. I actually think this is a 6-7 matchup in the semis as I have O’Toole taking out Wentzel. Either way, I have Smith in the finals. On the top, wow, they did not help out Marinelli. Bullard, Griffith and then Lewis. Holy hell. If he makes the finals, he will have earned it. I think he gets through and we have a B1G Finals rematch, with Marinelli winning again.
174 – I think Kaleb has a nice draw, and makes the quarters to set up what I am guessing is the first Romero-Romero battle in NCAA championships history. I think Kaleb win, but falls in the semis to Starocci. Kemmerer clears the top half and gets his title. I think Romero ends up 5th.
184 – Best case scenario for Rocky is 2-2. Get the upset in round 1, lose to Venz, win a consi match and lose to Lyon/Webster. I could also see 0-2 here. I’ve got Brooks over Hidlay here.
197 – Ugh. Amine over Bonnacorsi.
285 – I thought Tate would get a better seed that 21st. He lost 3-2 to Lance at B1Gs. I think he can reverse that but I’m not expecting that. Assuming he loses to Lance, I see 1-2 or 2-2 at best. If he can beat Lance, I see R12 as a possibility.
Team – I think the Bucks end up with 4 AAs and finish in the lower part of the top 10. Iowa wins with Lee as champ, DeSanto 5th, Eirman 2nd, Murin fails to place, Young 4th, Marinelli champ, Kemmerer champ, Brands 6th, Warner 7th, Cass 5th. If Murin sneaks through, which is definitely possible, they could end up with 10 AAs.

None of those guys will beat Sammy.
Heinselman getting Howard again kind of sucks.

At least Howard hasn't shown he can ride Malik, so he has that going for him. Although Howard is an OK scrambler, Malik seems to be better in those situations. As long as Malik can finish his leg attacks he should be alright. He has shown, so far, that he can get to Howards leg(s).

Sammy already pinned Murin and beat Lovett. Lewellan is tough but I don't think he is on Sammy's level. I think the biggest threat to Sasso's title aspirations is Austin O'Connor if they meet in the finals. I agree about Heinsleman. It's hard to beat a good guy 3 times. I think he gets it done but would have preferred he drew someone else.

I think the million dollar question has to be what expectations of do we all have of the Buckeyes for this tournament. Right now the over under on All Americans is set at three based on the seeds. If they emerge from this tournament with three AA’s (especially if Sammy wins it all) I think you feel adequate about the team moving into next season. If they manage more than three I think you consider it a successful tournament, especially in comparison with the lackluster performance at Big Tens. Less than three and I think lots of questions start getting asked. I think tournament success hinges on a couple of factors. 1. Can Sammy score enough from neutral to placate the elite level guys from the quarters on. He struggled against Ya Ya last year. I have no doubts about his ability to ride and win in the grittiest of fashions, but he has to get to legs against the Maullers and Llewellans of the world. 2. Is Kaleb healthy? A healthy Romero can make a deep run with his draw. If he can get away he will be in every match regardless of opponent. I think at Big Tens we saw him still hampered a little by the ankle. He absolutely can make the semis. I think the fact that the Big Ten wrestled an insular schedule heavily favors Big Ten wrestlers over the field. They’ve been tested to a higher degree than other pockets of the country. 3. Can Ethan Smith beat Travis Whittlake? This match might determine the Bucks tournament destiny. Many are picking the Cowboy to make a deep run starting with a defeat of Smith. He’s pretty dang good. If Ethan can finish, he will win. If not, it’s a long track back through the consis. 4. Is Malik able to beat everyone he is supposed to beat and knock off at least one guy above him? For some reason I feel like Malik’s destiny it tied to either Devin Schroder or Drew Hildabrandt for some reason. Both have been absolute terrors on top when they’ve wrestled Malik in the past. Don’t ask me why on that one. No one else has a real path to the podium as far as I can tell. Four returning AAs sounds a lot better heading into next year. Let’s see if it can be done.

I would love to see Malik get on the podium and think he has a good shot if he wrestles to his potential. He has greatly improved his finishing and his bottom wrestling but still needs to be strategic against guys who are really tough on top (Schroeder). Nobody is beating Spencer Lee but I could see Heinsleman beating anyone else in this bracket if he is on. I think he will AA Sammy is a gamer and I think he should be ready to go. His mat wrestling will be the difference and I think he wins his first title. I really like Smith's chances to be a high AA possibly even a finalist. He is good in all 3 positions, has a good motor, and has made big jumps every year. I think Romero should be top 6 if healthy.
