…to be your college coach if you were coming out of HS today? Or would you chose the school irregardless of who was coaching?

But if I did respond, I’d probably look into UNI, CSU, GWU, or even NIU. Smaller school and would want to be a catalyst to lift the program.
But that’s only if I responded.

I always will have an affinity for the Bucks, and since I live close I’ve gotten to see TR in action more than other coaches, so that’s an easy one for me. I admire his continuous, seemingly infinite passion for young people and the persist of excellence in both life and wrestling.
Outside that I’ve always liked the vibe that Kolat has. He’s got this underground cult like following with a great back story. I loved when he was on the Rudis podcast when they gave insight into the coaching mindset. Plus I love what he did at Campbell.
Patpop would be another. He is a program builder and seems to know how to get the most out of guys. I had a chance to meet up with him many years ago when he was at Binghamton. He’s a good dude with great energy. I like the underdog persona as well.

I would select a school where the wrestling program was on a solid footing and unlikely to be canceled.
At my university I had shoulder surgery my freshman year and missed the entire season. My sophomore year I qualified for the Division III national tournament (along with one other member of my team) but didn't get to go due to a spat between our coach and the athletic director. When I came back to school for my junior year I found that wrestling had been discontinued.

I would chose a school and not the coach. A great coach can prepare you for 4-5 years of athletic greatness. A great school can prepare you for your next 40 or 50 years of success.

I see your point but I do think a good coach is helpful in ways that extend way beyond sport.

That is undeniable. Consider for a moment that the majority of recruiting is done by assistant coaches and assistant coaches tend to be mobile. Obviously it would be ideal to have a great school and a great coach, but if forced to prioritize one should definitely consider that there is a possibility that there will be changes before your 5 years are up and it isn't the school. Just a thought.
