Discussion Topic: Strategies for the Bucks Finalists

In response to another post, here are my thoughts on what each Buckeye finalist needs to do to win.
Jags v Mendes: Mendes is a smaller, more active version of Griffin IMO.
Keys to win:
1) Keep the takedowns rolling. Jags has been a much better wrestler since he started looking to score more aggressively with his shot.
2) Avoid bottom if possible. Mendes has beaten Morgan twice and both times he rode him hard.
3) Defend the opposite side better. Jags has killer defense against a high C on his right leg. When Griffin shot left, Jags had no answer. Mendes could try to employ the same strategy. Some tweaking here is important.
-------------------------------------------
Pucillo v Varner: This matchup works well for Pucillo IMO.
1) Score a TD in the first period. Varner thrives on defense and riding. If Mike can take him down, it gets Varner out of his comfort zone.
2) Get out on bottom. Varner loves to ride. Iron Mike may be the best bottom wrestler in the country so he should get out without damage being done.
3) Outwrestle Varner on his feet. Kind of a return to my first point but I think this match comes down to who can score from neutral since both will probably escape easily on bottom. I think Mike can get out on bottom and possesses the better offense. If he stays within himself, he should win.
--------------------------
Bergman v Fox
Keys for J.D.
1) Find a way to score a takedown. Have a "surprise" in store.
2) Don't go down if you don't have to
3) If you get choice in second period, take down. Don't defer. It's easier to get out on bottom when you have more energy, esp, if the match is 0-0. Get to that Granby fast and keep scrambling
4) Push the match in neutral. Look to influence the officials.
5) Try to stay out of OT. It favors Fox unless he gets tired.

I've been on record on the national forums for my annoyance of Varner's style. I've watched him wrestle about 10 times this year, and I don't think I've seen him take more than a handful of shots or offensive attempts from his feet.
He is the type of wrestler that makes novice fans turn away from the sport.
This will be a true contrast of styles, with Pucillo the action machine, always on the attack. Hopefully the refs reward the aggressor.
Varner, to his credit, is almost impossible to finish on. Many ISU fans site hit victory over Herbert at Midlands. Anyone who watched that match saw Varner fend off about 20 (literally) Herbert attacks, while I'm not sure if Varner ever came within two feet of Herbert's legs. Finally, a frustrated Herbert tried some awkward throw in OT and was taken down by the defensive master. What I noticed was that Herbert consistently brought is secondary arm on shots up around the back of Varner, almost giving Varner a firm whizzard position. If Mike gets in, he needs to stay on the legs, and not enter into Varner's powerful core strength.
I am not sure if Pucillo can finish, but I sure hope he can.

Ethan:
I've seen Mike finish his High C without switching double simply by lifting through the crotch. That's how you finish against a guy that can whizzer out of anything.
