Discussion Topic: Mark Perry (Iowa) v. Nick Marable (Missouri)

Did anyone watch that match? Looking for some unbiased opinion about Perry's 3rd period takedown.

I was reading the recap and it mentioned several shots by Marable, and none by Perry, and many are complaining about the final TD. Thoughts?

Thanks.

it was a close takedown, but me personally, no takedown. When it looked like he was gaining control, Marable popped his hips back up and then locked up in the croch. I think it is a bad call and the match should have gone into overtime.

I thought it was takedown for Perry. Marable had him backpedaling alot during the match so I was surprised stalling calls didn't come into play. But, ultimately, Perry finds the way to win. That's why he's in his third finals.

Had Marable, not Perry, locked up that near C, and received the points, everyone would have been thrilled by the upset. Most of the complainers are Mizzou fans or Iowa haters.

Having said all this: I'd love to get Fred Feeney's take on the call.

I have a very hard time seeing where control was established.

In his post-match interview, Perry claims he had the cradle tight and that he only let it go as a matter of strategy after hearing the ref call "2". Otherwise, the call looks very iffy when closely scrutinized. I'd have been a lot more comfortable with it if Perry had brought him forward and off his base.

I believe it could have been called either way. Different referees, different calls. There is no doubting that he had it locked up. Question is to whether there was enough reaction time and who broke the lock? But then again I am not a guy in the stripes.

I don't remember which semi-final match it was after that, but there was a similar situaion that was much clearer that there was control and it took the ref a much longer time to make the call. I just remember watching and saying if Perry had a TD then there should be 2 in that situation. It was about 3 seconds after I said that that the points were awarded. If the ref had waited that long in Perry's match, they would have never given the 2 to Perry. I'm not buying what Perry says about having a "tight" cradle and letting it go for strategic purposes.

Its tough to argue Perry's results, I think he is now a 3X finalist, but I think that his style is so anti-Ohio style that I tend to be frustrated watching him win without attacking.

His abaility to ride people makes a huge difference, as Marable was not able, orr should I say willing, to take down in the third period.

Marable has a very, very bright future. Could be a multiple time national champ.

The Palmer-Metcalf match is on youtube as well and it might be the homer in me coming out but Palmers double with about 30 seconds left looks like more of a takedown than the Perry takedown against Marable.

Stu - I would have to say that is the homer in you <smile> . I want it to be a takedown also. You do have to wonder though, if it had been Metcalf/Iowa with the shot, would they have given the two?
