How can you call fleeing the mat when they don't go out of bounds?

Is this the right call? Anyone in the know have an observation on this?

I was wondering that too. I agreed with the call when he made it but then he didn't call them out of bounds???? Can't be fleeing the mat if they don't go out of bounds, can it? Stalling, possibly. Fleeing, No.

Not only that, but I thought he should have had 2 for the takedown?

J.P. - me too! He had both ankles covered.

Very disappointed by some of these calls.

Ethan...the new rule for fleeing doesn't require one wrestler to go all the way out of bounds..that is the problem when tv commentators do not know the rules, or the current interps. The interp that we got last year was that fleeing can be called even before they get out of bounds...you don't see it often, but it is called. It showed it very clear on the rules video this year.

Fred - thanks for the info.

Having watched the match, did you agree with the call?

Ethan, I thought the flee call was text book actually. Now..was it called that way all 3 days? Can't answer that one. I will tell you that, that is the way the rules committee intended the rule to be called however.

Fred - So once 'fleeing' was called, action was stopped? So that the TD after the call would not count?

J.P. - Fleeing doesn't stop the action at all. Only the whistle stops action.
Since one was in, and one was out, wrestling continued.

So where is the line drawn between fleeing and defending the shot? If a guy is in on a low single, the defensive wrestler can "punch out" which is what Poeta was doing. He did this until he was able to get back on the offensive. I may be way off, but that is the way it looked to me.

I just watched it again... Poeta heads straight to the line on Leen's shot. Since he fled, he is called for it. Then Poeta turns in, tries for the double, and right at the time I would of given it - criteria being, that the hips were down and covered and both arms were controlling the waist. The ref blows the whistle and calls them out of bounds. Were they out? The angle doesn't show it. Remember in college, if any part of either wrestler is in, they are still in bounds.
