Thought this deserved its own thread.
What a strategy. Hand fight, make Varner wrestle, and win it with superior bottom wrestling.

Mike beat Varner at his own game. Minimal TD attempts, beat him on the mat wrestling. Great job. What a season. I'm so glad Mike got his Championship because with Herbert coming back next year, he might not be able to beat him. You got to make the most of the opportunity when you get it.

I have a feeling that we will see a couple more good brawls between Varner and Pucillo in the future.

And Mike's win sealed the NCAA runner-up trophy. <smile> I'm hoping this type of performance will further help OSU in recruiting blue-chip wrestlers in the future.

What a great match that was just being able to beat Varner at his own game. He put together a great tournament and now I am rewarded for making the bet with 8-5 odds that were placed upon him earlier by the bookies.

His performance is special on many levels. He willed himself to 3 wins against brutally tough opponents. Doing this as a sophomore is a feat in itself. His hand fighting and tie ups are at the International level. He has explosive power that can't be taught. His poise was unwavering. Varner is an elite rider that had no answer to Mike's escapes. Wow!

And to think just a few years ago he lost at what, 152, for the state title? Now he is beating the big boys. Just solid and always keeps his head in the match. Never panics.
I wonder if Varner doesn't go up in weight next year or the year after. Not implying that he would run form Pucillo at all because I don't think he would. But he looks like a really big wrestler with not a lot of weight to lose.

Roe: No doubt that Iron Mike could make 174 while Varner is huge at 184.

What will happen next year with the return of Herbert to the wrestling scene? Will Herbert move up to 197 or return to 174? Does Varner move up now, he is a very big 184 no doubt about that.

Herbert has been wrestling at 185 internationally. I know international weight ins are the day before, and thusly lax, but Herbert was a 174 two years ago, I wouldn't expect him to be at 197. I would guess that Pucillo and Herbert, as well as Tyrel Todd, square off at 184 next year, with Varner, who is freaking massive, up at 197.
