Discussion Topic: Is it grip or grit?
Bruce Andrews added to this discussion on November 20, 2022

It's late in the match and your wrestler is in on a single leg. The opponent is sprawling and has a crossface on your wrestler. If your wrestler holds on he will win or at least send the match to overtime. However, with only a few seconds left the grip is broken, the opponent spins behind for two and wins the match.

Is this a case of a weak grip or is it a lack of grit? Obviously, this is a rhetorical question for discussion purposes and any relation to persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental.

Initially losing his grip is a lack of grip. But, if the score was tied when losing his grip and he allowed his opponent to spin behind for two, and win, then I believe your wrestler likely also lacks grit. Of course I realize we have posters on this site that had a more successful career than I, so I’ll defer to them and look forward to reading their posts.

Hey, Brady, what was the name of the kid from Versailles(?) who had the crazy grip strength? (Maybe a Bernholtz). He would just step in on any shot, lock his hands, and reel it in, no matter how incremental...

The two kids from there that stand out in my memory are Scotty Magateaux and Dave Bernholtz.
