Discussion Topic: Should Tom Ryan have been Coach of the Year?
Hank Kornblut added to this discussion on March 25, 2008
Tom Brands was selected as NWCA Coach of the Year as Iowa won the NCAA championship and the Big Ten. But some on national forums have argued that Tom Ryan deserved the award. The crux of the argument is that Brands benefited greatly from the Virginia Tech transfer situation which amounted to adding an extra recruiting class to a solid Iowa squad.
Ryan, on the other hand, took a squad that was 45th in the country two years ago and got them to second place.
Any thoughts?

We can't forget that even though Brands benefited from the Virginia Tech transfers, he did sign them also. So, as a coach they are still his recruits. I don't think we can claim Ryan as coach of the year just yet since Iowa did win everything they entered and lost only to Oklahoma State. They were the best team and clearly it was Brands who brought them back to the #1 spot. Ryan will have his day, that is for sure.

I see Hank's point; in essence Tom Ryan "brought" only Mike Pucillo & 5th yr. senior Chris Vondruska back to a good OSU squad, whereas Brands brought Metcalf & Slaton and how many others that he recruited ?? with him back to an always well-recruited Iowa.

Coach of the Year??? Perhaps Brands does win that. Winning everything you enter is impressive. Only one slip up wth OSU. Not bad. I like the point of the kids being
his
recruits. I thought he brought four with him to Iowa.
Something to consider... tNDG brought Pucillo and Vondruska with him. Albeit, Vondruska for one year. But imagine if Coach Ryan would have had two others like Pucillo (talent-wise and eligibility-wise), say, at 125, 174 and 197? Heck - say any three weights outside of 141 and 149! They would have added depth or, perhaps, a more-abled wrestler in that weight class. Consider if just one of those was able to start and was a semi-finalist??? Those are big points at the national tournament!!!
All hypothetical. My guess is tNDG leads this team and program to a national title (perhaps numerous) within the next 7 years.
A secondary goal would/could be to get the national tournament IN Columbus!!!
<sign_oh> sweetheart!!!

And Ryan's recruits as of yet are not scoring the majority of the team's points. Ryan fans may get a better feel next year and especially in two years.
You could also guess what would have happened if Brands was named Ohio State's coach and brought his 4 recruits with him. Ohio State would be celebrating their first National Championship today. Coulda, woulda, shoulda...

Im assuming you meant Terry Brands of the OTC. That is what I remember as well.
Brands brought five recruits with him; Metcalf, Slaton, LeClere, Borschel, and T.H. Leet, a Georgia native and three time state champion.

Who IN THE WORLD is Tim Brands?!?!
I apologize... yes, it was Terry Brands. My bad.
If someone could let me know just who in the world Tim Brands is, that would be great.

When the announcement was made of Hellickson's demise I would think Brands (Tom) was the leading candidate, but in a smart move by Iowa they fired Zalesky and immediately hired Tom. I am sure that they felt if Tom went to Ohio State he would never leave. This opened the job for other candidates, of which Terry's name was mentioned. ISU made their move when the Iowa firing was announced, fearing the loss of Cael. Thus, three great coaches lost their jobs.

of those who applied for the Ohio St head job, 4 candidates ended up being interviewed in person:
Terry
Brands, Tom Ryan, Jim Heffernan, and Tommy Rowlands.
by this time it was known Tom Brands was headed to U of Iowa, and he didnt apply to Ohio St U anyway.

Ken: When Hellickson exited there was a lot of chatter (probably the best word for it) on the forums that Tom Brands would be courted by OSU. Even from Iowa posters. Iowa seemed to think that way, too, so Tom got the Iowa spot and Zalesky was out (at least those were the reports).
I am happy with the way it worked out given the assistant coaches who have accompanied Ryan.

First, I'm proud of people on this forum. I posted this topic to see how people would respond. I expected most to argue that Ryan should have been C.O.Y. Most, however, understand why Brands got it. Certainly, I do.
I'm thrilled the Bucks hired Coach Ryan (although I don't understand why Tom Borelli wasn't even interviewed). Ohio State's AD found a guy that "gets it" in a big way and has sold "it" to the state. While Brands and his recruits would have probably won it here, it'll be sweeter when the title is won by Ohio kids.
When Russ stepped down, the reverberations were felt throughout much of D1. His departure led directly to Zalesky and Douglas being released. Incidentally, if Iowa State doesn't act, I think it's Cael, not Tom Brands that would have gotten the Ohio State job. Just a hunch based on Gene Smith's ties to ISU.

Hank:
I think Tom Ryan would have gotten the job either way, mostly because he was an experienced and accomplished head coach and while Cael was an amazing wrestler, he was only assistant coach and only for a few years. Obviously we know now that he's doing very well with the Iowa State program.
My positive response to your topic question of whether or not Tom Ryan deserved to get the Coach of the Year award didn't mean I think Tom Brands shouldn't have gotten it. I think they both were deserving candidates, and if I had to pick between the two I would have given it to Brands. He obviously has done a very good job at Iowa and this was a tremendous year for the Hawkeyes.
