Discussion Topic: A friend’s son wants to wrestle - who should he watch?
Drew Taylor added to this discussion on July 2, 2023

My friend’s young son wants to take up wrestling. He knows only the basics but knows his way around YouTube. My friend asked me to name some wrestlers his kid should watch. Who would you pick?

My choices:

Logan Stieber. His bar arm series is something wrestlers should work on from an early age. On his feet, there is maybe no one better at moving his opponent with a hard collar tie.

Kyle Dake/Bo Nickal. Youth coaches can overemphasize leg attacks. Dake and Nickal can take you down 100 different ways without touching a knee to the mat.

Luke Pletcher. Can mat awareness be taught? If so, watch Luke. He had a great sense of where he was in every position.

I would add David Taylor.

I would not suggest Nickal except for pure excitement.

Not to be a wet blanket but my thought is to get REALLY good at a single, a double, and maybe a few tilts. You can go a LONG way by executing moves when everyone knows what you can do and can do it to them anyway.
With time he can expand his repertoire but clogging a new wrestlers head with a lot of moves (that he will rarely ge a chance to use) seems counterproductive.
The video review scan come after he has some awareness of positioning on the mat.
Just my $.02.

Jim, you are absolutely right. The basics are covered with Logan. I omitted that reason for picking him.

Mike Pucillo’s front headlock/short offense
Steve Luke’s stance (neutral positioning), shot defense and stand up
Spencer Lee’s tilt series
Nathan Tomasello’s elbow pass to high crotch

Maybe pick your favorite Iowa stud for a good example of constant pressure…Tom or Terry Brands, Ironside, Mcllravy, maybe even Desanto?

Body type should play a role in who he watches. JMO.

I would recommend Bo Bassett, he is a young guy that another young guy may be inspired by. He's a world champ and has tons of videos available to watch, not only competition videos but technique and training videos.
