Discussion Topic: Thoughts and Questions about Wrestling Coaches Associations
Dan Cosimi added to this discussion on March 26, 2008
Some thoughts and questions I have about wrestling coaches associations...
It seems like the coaches associations should have the most power in the state or the nation over our sport because, in that case, everyone is represented fairly (by their coach). The administration at the OHSAA is good at organizing some stuff but the coaches are the ones that know and live our sport every day, so they should be the deciders of what goes on in our sport.
Why do I mention that? Because I think by giving the coaches more power, we could change things for the better! I don't mean to imply that things are going wrong in our sport, but we can always strive for the best.
Most coaches are teachers, so why not have a big statewide coaches association meeting in the summer - at Ohio State which is a centralized location - and talk about the changes within our sport.
Maybe take a vote on some things like:
- Do you think we should keep the new option of starting in the neutral position or go back to always starting on the mat?
- Do you think we should keep the current hydration certification system? Is it working?
- Should we keep weigh-ins before morning sessions or move them back to after the night sessions like they used to be?
- Should we have evaluations for referees and a coaches vote to get them to advance to the district and state tournaments?
- And many more...
Listen to people's ideas about things like:
- Seeding teams for all Sectionals like they do in the Central District
- Televising or broadcasting the state finals and semis (like OHSAA/ONN do for football and soccer and boys' basketball girls' basketball and hockey and...)
- Matside weigh-ins
- And many more...

I think the one big thing that I would like to see happen is a true dual meet state tournament. The one they have in other states such as Pennsylvania and Indiana is how Ohio should try and have theirs.

Interesting thought but I'm not sure how it would work... wouldn't that take a long time and a lot of duals to decide?

Dan the OHSWCA does the exact things you suggest. However, the general membership meeting is always NEOTA day and the executive committee gets a sit down with the OHSAA at the state tournament.

There would be quite a bit of duals, but if you started early enough it could be done quite well. Here in Iowa, I've seen them conduct the state duals in quite an impressive manner. They start a month or so before the state tournament and basically have a team dual tournament. The top 2 move on to the next level. It basically turns into a Sectional, District, and State meet setup. They have an impressive day long dual meet state tournament and the winner is crowned the state dual champ. The great thing about that is EVERYONE gets a shot at the state dual crown. I'm really impressed w/ how they do it out here in Iowa and Ohio would benefit from adopting such a dual setup. The down side, they still have people wrestling AFTER the state tournament is over. Kind of odd to see kids wrestling after the individual state tourney is over.
