Discussion Topic: Jeff Jordan State Champ Camp - Quality Question
Rudy Dizon added to this discussion on April 1, 2008

I think I know the obvious answer by Graham's success but I am trying to get a feel on whether it would be worth a trip to Ohio vs. the Oklahoma State camp or the Azevedo/Hitchcock camp. I have a young first year wrestler and a few Regional Champions/Placewinners I am thinking about sending from California. Any first hand feedback would be great.

Thanks
Rudy

Rudy...Been there, done that. We took six of our guys to the team camp.

Mark it down... It is WELL worth the trip but only if you are willing to meet these conditions... (and, actually, this is true for any camp)

1) You go too! Bring your shoes and get on the mat with the guys. Word to the wise...be ready to strap it on.
2) Don't forget the video camera. The treasures are in the details, my friend!
3) DO NOT let the info stay in Graham, OH. In retrospect, I think we should have made sure to get together with the campers at least once a week (if not twice) to refresh on what we had just learned.
4) Go in in shape. BAD idea to use the camp as a means to get into shape.
5) Wrestle as many people NOT from the group you bring.
6) Make a deal; a pact - with your wrestlers - use the taught techniques as much as possible. It is obvious that the Graham/Jordan/Ryan/Leng/Raymond Anderson system works. The more you use it, the more comfortable you'll be with it. That is when the strides will be made.
7) One last thing...if you get the chance...watch the little guys! It will blow you away.

That's about all I have. If I think of more, I'll be sure to put it on here.

I had a sneaky feeling Jordan knows what he's doing, but you know how it is. You gotta make sure.

Good job on the homework. JJ would be proud. One thing I should have mentioned...get your application AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! I may have this fact wrong but I am almost positive that he turns away more than he accepts. (If I'm wrong, I won't admit it...I'll just blame Raymond 'the Blonde Bomber' Anderson!!!) When we were there, we joined a team from Virginia (close to DC), Maryland, Michigan and Indiana.

If you think about that...5 states in one weekend. Not bad.

I went back when it was first starting (summer of 94). My first time it was just 5 of us there (Avery Zerkle, Chris Schlagle, Ty Morgan, my twin brother, and me). It is intense but wow did I learn a ton. It was so much better than any other camp I have been to. It taught more than technique, it taught a mindset while on the mat and during training. My junior year I was a much smarter wrestler and a more intense one. I'd recommend this to anyone. I went twice during that summer and I'm glad I did. I still watch the video tapes of what we were taught so I can teach others that technique. Good to have to brush up on technique during the season.

Quote from Rudy Dizon's post:

"I had a sneeky feeling Jordan knows what he's doing, but you know how it is. You gotta make sure."

I don't know what could possibly give you that feeling.

- Winning the Ironman?
- Beating Ironman runner-up and defending national champion Blair Academy, NJ by 42 points at the Ironman?
- Beating Ironman third place and 12x consecutive Ohio Division 1 state champions St. Edward by 92 points at the Ironman?
- Winning the Super 8 Duals by destroying St. Edward 47-13 (with then- national top five Oak Park, MO in the field)?
- Winning the Ohio Division 2 state tournament, beating their own scoring record by scoring 221.5 points, with runner-up Oak Harbor at only 81 points?
- Unanimously clinch the national #1 ranking? (By everyone that isn't logically handicapped.)

No way! That stuff was small-time!
If Jordan was really a good coach he would have broken OHSAA rules by exceeding the 20-point schedule limit and scheduling a last-minute dual against Blair to give them a second chance. (But not until Blair deemed them a worthy opponent after Graham crushed them at the Ironman.)

All of this information above can only lead me to one conclusion: The Jordan-led Graham team ducked their way to a "national championship" because they're really not that good.

<laughing>

fyi, coach Rudy Dizon had several wrestlers in the IRONMAN last season, we expect him back this season too. He is part of our "California connection" .

One of his returning kids is David Klingsheim , 7th in rugged IRONMAN 119 weight class, but dropped to 112 and won the state title in California. (they only crown 14 state champs per year in Calif, not 28 or 42 or 56.)

DC posts, "Beating Ironman runner-up and defending national champion Blair Academy, NJ by 42 points at the Ironman? " ----- how soon we forget, ha, ha the defending national champ that St Paris beat at Ironman was St Eds, not Blair .

Their record certainly speaks for itself, but it might be even more impressive if they did it all with homegrown kids like Maple used to do.

we get your point, but this is a "threadkiller", getting off subject to debate this issue-- let's not go there, its been debated ad nauseum.

To separate the two seems kind of naive to me, but sorry I wasn't intending to start any debate.

well, wherever this is debated it never gets anywhere, and it has been debated often on many forums. Its a sore point with many people i know. But each side has their points and aint conceding an inch.

Maple also won most of their Team state titles in a one class state, not 3 classes like now. I'm a fan of Maple's great history myself.

Bob, I graduated from Maple in 1974 and am a big fan as well.

While it will never be what it was, Jaime has done a great job of keeping things going considering all that has changed over there.

Gary, did u wrestle at Maple ?

Jamie has done wonderful job considering all---- he won his 300th dual this season too. One of the very youngest to ever do it in Ohio. i think former Sandusky SMCC coach Jude Roth is the youngest ever in Ohio to win 300.

U should have been at IRONMAN finals in December, we honored Mike Milkovich with our Legacy award. He actually came up from the Florida Keys to receive it and the event was a highlite of the tourn. Many of his family were there, grandchildren, daughters, sons Mike Jr, Tom, Pat, Dan, their wives, hope i didnt forget anyone.

Mike sent me very nice letter afterwards, he really loved it.

Just my freshman year, at one of the junior highs for Mike's brother John and Dave Morgan (his first year at Maple).

I thought about it, but I know the Ironman is always a zoo.

My son wrestles at Shaker so we see Jaime and his staff, all guys my wife and I went to school with, at least once a year at the LEL Duals.

I saw Dan at a middle school tournament a couple of years ago and knew his dad was doing well.

Gary,
Ironman is a zoo, but better a zoo than a morgue, ha, ha !

kids & coaches love it i think-- high school atmosphere, fans close to the mats, SRO crowds--- all these college coaches walking around, 2 years ago Tom Brands, one year ago Cael Sanderson-- its the real deal, kids ranked # 1 in the nation losing, only 2 lost last season, but one year 5 # 1s lost. Theres energy there, Bill Barger's brainchild has aged well.
