Roy Hall is a great guy, and he always sought the toughest comp-- Davison has been coming to Medina tourn and st Eds Quads for quite a few years.
Roy coached Metcalf, Donahoe, and Reader ---3 of Michigans all time greatest -- in fact for high school Metcalf may well be their best ever in Michigan i think, although Mark Churrella and Andre Metzger are way up there too. .

I know we have the techinques the "Metzger" and the "Churella"........What move will be deemed the "Metcalf" will it be pushing someone until they vomit and scoring 13 takedowns in the 3rd?
Suggestions?

I wonder if everyone is getting their "Ducks in row" for Roy to take over at MSU. Would be a great upgrade.

Last I talked to him I think this break is legitly for some family time. And a Big Ten college coaching position would be quite opposite that agenda.

Thats what I was thinking...but Mr. Brisette seems to have addressed it adequately.

Very impressive job as a coach. He is in the 99th percentile of coaches and did an outstanding job of getting his wrestlers ready for the next level. Great athletes, sound fundamentals and solid direction. Very interesting thought on him clearing the way to be hired at MSU. I think he would have similar success as Borrelli at CMU (perennial top 10 team) as he understands developing wrestlers. I read the article as he wanted to spend more time with family and being a college coach entails quite a bit of time.

Rex,
much as i like Roy Hall, i cant say anyone would duplicate Tom Borrelli's success at C Mich, has completey dominated the MAC for a dozen years with 4 top 10 NCAA Team finishes in that time. Has always finished high at the
NWCA college Div I duals, too, has even made the finals there
.
i have got to know Borrelli well, starting with the NCAA tourn in Cleveland in 1998, where C Mich took 4th i think--- he is an amazing guy. Very humble, but very driven, with a plan & a vision that he never detours from. His kids believe in him, thats the big thing.

Bob-
Borrelli has done an outstanding job and the comparison was made to point out that I believe Roy has the knowledge and understanding to develop wrestlers and finish in the top 10 of the NCAAs on a yearly basis much like Coach Borrelli.
I realize theory is just that, a thought. No actual doing.
Borrelli has done some remarkable things in the MAC conference, which should be recognized. The level of success he has is not an accident. He is a builder who understands what it takes to be successful as evidenced by his team's records.

Rex,
see my comments & stats on the thread, "AAs by conference breakdown". Conclusion: Borrelli is The Master right now.
if he was at Okla St or Minnesota or even Ohio State could he win an NCAA team title ? i cant say he could or couldnt.
BUT if John Smith was at C Mich
could he competely dominate
that conference for the last dozen years, a conference which still only gets 19 NCAA quals and where Borrelli only a couple years ago got the full 9.9 ??? no room for error here.
keep in mind at C Mich, even John Smith would Not be getting
the Nathan Morgan's from Calif, the Colemans Scott's from PA, the Johnny Hendricks from Oklahoma, the Rosholt bros from Idaho/Oklahoma, the Jordan Oliver's & Alex Meade's, etc.

Bob,
I'm not so sure on that last statement of yours. Tom Brands got some obviously great kids to come to Virginia Tech. Would John Smith have gotten all those kids mentioned? Hard to say but kids like Nathan Morgan, Coleman Scott, Jordan Oliver seem to be tailor-made for a coach like Smith just like Slaton, Metcalf, LeClere, etc. seem tailor-made for Brands.

Virginia Tech not a hard sell, the school is awash in bigtime football money and the campus is located in one of the most beautiful areas of the nation. C Michigan in frigid upstate Michigan is a different story.
Tom Brands took all Iowa recruits with him, except for Metcalf. Iowa homegrown kids will follow Brands, a legend. ----Okla St is a national recruiter, not much homegrown talent. John Smith's last NCAA title team had ONE homegrown guy, 165 Johny Hendricks. This year the entire state of Oklahoma only had a measly 5 NCAA Div I quals homegrown--- so Smith wouldnt have much homegrown talent to take with him, even if they wanted to follow him..
Brands had a much easier sell in Virginia Tech, and had homegrown talent to follow him.

Bob, you are correct in the differences of campus atmosphere. Virginia Tech is in a beautiful area. I wrestled for Liberty University along the edge of the Application Mts. Very beautiful (except when running up them at 6am).
I've never been on CMU's campus. I was thinking more along the lines of Smith's legend vs. Brand's. You'd think that Michigan/Ohio would have some nice talent for Smith to look at though. I can't ever see him anywhere other than OkSt. The special ESPN did on the cowboys made that pretty apparent.

my point was hypothetical only-- i cant see John Smith anywhere but Oklahoma st either, BUT when U of Nebraska opened up about 6 or 7 years ago he did either apply or threaten to apply to get things he wanted at Okla St.
Also i hear Smith not entirely happy right now about the huge money T Boone Pickens is putting into the Okla st football program----- maybe John feels overlooked and wants some too ???
my main point was that C Mich not known for much, no real selling points EXCEPT Borrelli and what he has built there. Given that and their conference and location, maybe no one else could do better there than Tom Borrelli has done.
