Discussion Topic: Lee, Retherford Qualify 57kg and 65kg for USA Olympic Team
Hank Kornblut added to this discussion on May 12, 2024
Nice job as both needed to perform well. Lee won gold and Retherford earned a bronze.
Retherford was defeated early and had to win 4 consecutive bouts which is no easy feat.
Lee won a tough early bout where he was down 6-2 at one point and never looked back.
The USA will now have Olympic reps at all 6 wt classes in the Olympics.
As I've mentioned previously, Lee should probably no longer be wrestling. He's damaged both knees multiple times. He's better served as a freestyler as his top game is phenomenal. His trapped arm gut and leg lace just change the match.

Making an Olympics team is so, so hard.
Lee’s knees kept him from competing in freestyle for several years. He’s still not fully healthy.
Zain planned to retire last fall rather than make an enormous weight cut to 65 kilos. What he did yesterday was inspiring.
Dake had to deal with JB forever. Brooks defeats the world’s top wrestler in David Taylor. Parris takes advantage of Steveson’s WWE stint.
There’s something to be said about sticking it out when things look bleak. I really like this team.

Glad to be wrong about Zain. I did not think he would qualify the weight based off his history. He was essentially retired and about to take a new job before making this run. Just incredible and hats off to him.

Man, I was nervous following this, especially for Zain. What a grueling process.
Enormous props to Lee and Zain. That was awesome!

The USA, Russia and Azerbaijan are the only countries to qualify all three wts in men's freestyle.
The USA did the same in women's freestyle
In Greco, we qualified 3 of 6 wts.
Interesting to note that Puerto Rico qualified 4 wts primarily due to US wrestlers.
Mexico qualified 2 for the same reason.
And of course there's San Marino and Serbia with one American and Serbia (2 qualifiers, one American)

Now we're down to 3 weights in freestyle. Will it never end!

I Greg Kirkvliet has no ACL either, I think both (well, they are there, but torn). Not sure how they do it.
