Ohio U puts 3 wrestlers in the finals: Peyton Kellar (157, 5th in NCAA last season), Garrett Thompson (174 and ranked in top 10 nationally), Jordan Green (285). Derek Raike (149) is going for 5th. Not sure what to make of the rest of the squad but the Bobcats have a handful of good wrestlers.

Bryce Hepner beat Maxx Mayfield in the semis and won 165 by MFF. That's a decent statement to start the season.

Brock Herman lost to former MSU starter and UM transfer Chase Saldate 4-3. He will wrestle another former spartan, Caleb Fish in a cons match that will determine if he goes for 3rd or 5th.

Herman beat Fish and will face Saldate again. I guess that's why TR doesn't make wrestle offs the deciding factor in who will start. Herman had a poor showing in wrestle offs and has beat some good guts today and nearly beat Saldate the first time around. Is he going to be the next "Isaac Wilcox" for the Bucs?

Brock scored first takedowns in both matches against Saldate, which is impressive and elite. Lacking elite skills and confidence from top and bottom though. He's a NQ candidate maybe even AA as is right now but with some solid skills from top and bottom he becomes a threat to anyone.

If practice isn't addressing the parts of your game that need work; then it's just an exercise in futility.

Saldate and Fish both tough dudes, and Herman is right there with them. Herman & Gallagher could be mirrors of another, great on their feet, bad at top and bottom. We have yet to see Gallagher this year, so perhaps he worked on his mat skills this offseason?

Agreed. Fish was quarterfinalist/Rd12 one year and very game. Saldate had Haines beaten last year but for a literal second on the clock.

Interesting match between Kellar and Saldate. Lots of funk and missed out on some of it because the camera was center aimed with no view of the edge. Kellar is grey area wrestler who could end up in the finals due to his willingness and ability to create unique scrambles against most anyone.

Re: scrambles,
Saldate> Herman
Kellar>Saldate

Quote from Jack Muni's post:

"Is he going to be the next "Isaac Wilcox" for the Bucs?"

No disrespect to Wilcox, as he rarely wrestled his optimal weight and always competed hard, but Herman is showing early in this season that his ceiling is much higher than that.

He's wrestling like a top 20 guy right now, definitely NQ quality at least. And to Rex's point, there are some simple things he can improve on even throughout this season that would make him a much more difficult opponent.

Always exciting to be surprised by a young guy that wasn't quite on the radar.

Wanted to add that Nick Blackburn, Centra Michigan, (Mentor), placed third in the fresh/soph division. It’s been 3 decades since we had a D1 win. Not since the days of my friend Pat Berdyz and Andy Douglas at Miami OH have we gotten wins. Super proud of that kid. He’s tough and smart, he works his butt off.He also bumped up to 149 last night and won 4-1 over IU.

Berdyz…there’s a name haven’t heard in a long time. When people talk about how technique is better today, but guys were tougher back in the day, or when we say the guys at the top might be better, but today’s brackets lack the depth of the 80s and 90s. Guys like Pat Berdyz are a great example of those hard nosed guys that never won a title.

Berdys was one of only a few guys that could make Alan Fried work for a win. I remember him well at the Mentor district wearing a shoulder harness. Tough kid, good with legs.

If someone made a list of the best wrestlers to ever come out of the Mentor High program, Berdys would be near the top.

Pat lives out in Lake County and his two sons wrestled for Dave Rowan at Perry.
You look at Pat now and there is not a doubt in your mind that he was a wrestler.
