Tom Ryan tells Flo that Brandon Cannon will challenge Paddy Gallagher at 157.

Thoughts:

Cannon redshirted at 141 last year and this year competed at 149 for wrestleoffs. Will he be undersized at 157?

Did Cannon challenge D’Emilio at 149?

Does this signal Sasso is likely to stay at 165 and not drop a weight?

Drew: All those thoughts popped into my head as well. They're legit questions.

I'll just add I was surprised that Coach Ryan was so expansive in his comments about Beau Bartlett. WhileI believe he's correct in his assessment, sometimes it's best to simply keep your thoughts to yourself. There's nothing to gain by giving PSU/Sanderson/Bartlett a reason to be pissed off.

125. 157, 165, 174, 184 are all up for grabs still.

My thoughts.

125- mccrone was the sixth best recruit in the buckeyes recruiting class and I never expected him to be a starter. He improves year after year. Never thought he would stay ahead of Kilkeary but he beat him again the year after Kilkeary had a great summer. Tom even claimed he was most improved this year. He is in contention to be an all American this year. I’m not quite sure why this weight is still open. Even if all things were equal Mccrone is so tough on top he can pin or bonus people at a much higher rate. Unless kilkeary was injured you stay with the guy ranked in the top 10. Also mccrone has the NCAA experience. The loser of this battle may be gone next year as they are both career 125 and they aren’t going to start at 133.

157- I was surprised by cannons mention also. Herman had a good open and he wasn’t even mentioned. Must mean that Cannon is pretty far ahead of Herman. Paddy if healthy is a serious all American threat. The only way I see Paddy not earning the spot is if his injury is still lingering.

165-sasso is there right now but is he really the best option? I love the story but Sasso had two decently close matches with two kids who aren’t close to being NCAA qualifiers. Sasso is not there yet but the hope is he improves a lot in the next few months. If not hepner can go or possibly paddy moves up if cannon looks good.

174-I if he’s mentioning this weight that means he’s not entirely confident in Carson. If Carson’s not here we are in trouble.

184- Shumate is coming down to challenge Rotogotzke.

My advice to starters is to perform well at CKLV. With so many spots up for grabs, the coaching staff is looking for someone to step up and make these decisions easy.

Think about the non-starters. This lineup wins many Big Ten duals.

125-Kilkeary
133-Davino
141-Gonzalez
149-Cannon
157-Herman
165-Hepner/Birden
174-Hepner/Birden
184-Welsh
197-Shumate
285-Swenski

And I agree, Hank. Jesse Mendez doesn’t need his coach poking the bear, even if what Tom said is accurate.

The one thing that worries me about McCrone is his inability to defend his legs. He is fine against unranked guys, but not with ranked wrestlers. Las Vegas should give us a better idea where he stands. I remember Bouzakis had the same problem, but he adjusted by wrestling lower on one knee to help that problem.
