The Bucks are on the road Saturday as they travel to Pitt. Just like last year this match is primed for a let down following the CKLV. If you recall there were several head scratching loses in this dual, including Mendes dropping a match in the last seconds to Cole Matthews. While he is gone, Pitt always fields a competitive team. On paper this should be a lop sided dual in the Bucks favor, but with the number of injuries who knows what it will look like. D’Emilio, Gallagher, Kharchla, Rygotskie, Geog, and Feldman could all be out. I’m not sure it’s even worth taking stab at lineups. I’m assuming we see several backups go.

My thoughts (Rankings per InterMat):
125 – #6 Brendan McCrone v. #16 Nick Babin – These two split matches last year, with McCrone winning the second. I think McCrone has upped his game and gets the win. I will say decision, but if McCrone gets to work on top, bonus is always an option.
OSU 3 – Pitt 0
133 – #7 Nic Bouzakis v. #31 Vince Santaniello – These two split as well last year, with Bouzakis winning the second. I think Nic handles business and gets the decision.
OSU 6 – Pitt 0
141 – #2 Jesse Mendez v. #21 Anthony Santaniello – Mendez got the tech last year, and I will give Santaniello the benefit of improvement and just go major.
OSU 10 – Pitt 0
149 – #12 Dylan D’Emilio v. #28 Finn Solomon – This is the first of multiple weights where it isn’t clear who will be wrestling for the Buckeyes. DD swept Solomon last year, with the first being a major and the second being a 1 point win. If he’s healthy, I think DD gets the decision. If DD isn’t 100%, or we see Gavin Brown, I give Solomon the decision.
OSU 13 – Pitt 0
157 – #7 Paddy Gallagher v. #31 Dylan Evans – Paddy majored Evans last year, and I think he can do the same this year, especially when he knows that any bonus points could be the difference in the match.
OSU 17 – Pitt 0
165 – #8 Sammy Sasso v. Kelin Laffey – Sammy should bounce back and pick up a decision here. Bonus would be great, but I’m not counting on it.
OSU 20 – Pitt 0
174 – e’Than Birden/Carter Chase/Bryce Hepner v. #17 Luca Augustine – No idea who the Bucks put out for this one. I am guessing Chase, but hoping for Birden or Hepner. No matter who it is, I am giving Augustine the decision.
OSU 20 – Pitt 3
184 – Seth Shumate/#15 Ryder Rogotzke v. #11 Reece Heller – Ryder pinned Heller last year, but that means nothing for prognostication purposes. I favor Heller with the decision, regardless of which wrestler OSU sends out, but I think this is almost a toss up.
OSU 20 – Pitt 6
197 – #19 Luke Geog/Gavin Bell/Seth Shumate v. #16 Mac Stout – Another weight where it isn’t clear at all who OSU sends out. Stout owns a win over Geog, and I favor him by decision, at least, over whomever OSU sends out.
OSU 20 – Pitt 9
285 – #9 Nick Feldman/Mike Misita v. #14 Dayton Pitzer – I favor Feldman by decision, but Pitzer over Misita by major. I think we see Magic Mike in this one.
OSU 20 – Pitt 13
Overall – With this being on the road, and OSU only able to bring a limited number of wrestlers, I think we see a few backups here. A healthy OSU team handles Pitt, but I think we see about 5 or 6 regular starters this weekend, and Pitt might be able to steal the dual. I am not as worried about the dual win or loss, I just want to see the wrestlers we are expecting to be in the lineup at the end of the season wrestle well.

Looks like Pitt is sending out backups at 125 and 165, so those could both end up bonus for the Bucks. If Ohio State sends out the lineup they posted, I think they win the first 6 weights, get some bonus, and win the match.

Looking forward to seeing Birden wrestle on Friday. I see they listed the three teams OSU will face in the Collegiate Duals on Dec. 21. University of North Carolina, Lock Haven & Iowa State. Should be interesting, it could be an opportunity to see more of the RS freshmen, particularly Ben Davino.

Also really looking forward to seeing Birden, I think he is going to be excellent. Just hoping he isn't overpowered at 174, but he has the length.

"Birden needs some offense"

That’s how he has always wrestled against upper level guys through high school. He blew the doors off of most guys but then used really solid defense to hold them at bay. His state tournament bouts were always one or two take downs after the quarters. Go back and look at the last three state brackets. That’s his game. I think the best comparison is Josh Demas. Both are central Ohio guys. Long, rangy, quick, and very slick. I think Birden is better defensively at this stage than I remember Demas.
