The Bucks open up Big Ten dual season away in Champaign, Illinois Friday night. This is a much improved Illinois team. OSU comes in undefeated and ranked as the fifth best dual team in the country, likewise the Illini are also undefeated and ranked as the 10th best dual team. There should be lots of great matchups, but if OSU wrestles to ability they should win.

125- #10 McCrone v Riley.
-No reason to not expect bonus here as McCrone consistently manhandles lesser opponents.
133- #7 Bousakis v #2 Byrd.
-What version of Nic do we get? When on he can win this kind of match but consistency is not his strength. Byrd can absolutely win a title this year. He is positionally sound, a touch rider, and will wear Bousakis down as the match goes on. Byrd by decision.
141- #2 Mendes v. #17 Pucino
-Mendes by major
149- #11 D’Emilio v #10 Webster
-wrestlestat predicts Webster by decision here. Dylan did lose 4-1 last year in Websters redshirt season. He is a talented freshman with AA aspirations. D’Emilio has missed some time this year but is a bigger version of himself this year. This is the rule of match he needs to win to AA.
157- #8 Gallagher v Kraisser
-I feel like this kid is a Campbell transfer, but I may be wrong. Common opponents suggest Paddy wins going away. I’ll say controlled decision.
165- #23 Sasso v #12 Scoles
-I wonder if the staff manages Hepner/Sasso a little different with Big Tens starting. The Illinois freshman is 9-0 on the season. I think the coaching staff probably starts Hepner or some other spot starter in select duals during the Big Ten season. I have no lean here considering I’ve never heard of this kid.
174- #9 Kharchla v #19 Braunagel
- the lesser of the two Braunagels but still a very tough out. I think Carson is just better in neutral. Close decision, maybe a one takedown match.
184- #15 Rygotske v #12 Ruth
- Predicting Ryder’s match outcomes is pointless. But I’m sure it will be fun. I think this presents an interesting matchup. Ruth is very tough, but very conservative. I don’t think he will put himself in positions that allow Ryder to capitalize on big points. No way this ends in a decision. I think Ruth can take him down and ride him. If he is to bonus Rygotske it’s because Ryder does wild stuff. It could just as easily end with Ryder winning by bonus. Who knows
197- Shumate v #11 Braunagel
-Interesting that these are both undersized 197’s. Braunagel is very tough and a likely round of 12/ AA this year. Good positionally and very solid defense. Unless it comes from a throw I’m not sure how Seth scores. Braunagel by decision.
285- #7 Feldman v #11 Luffman
-Feldman is just better. Luffman is tough but not in Nicks level. One or two takedown win for the big guy

Not the BT opener. That was Oregon State yesterday. Oregano is now part of BT.

I don't think Illinois has wrestled competitively since December 6th vs Indiana. Long time off.

Unless he is injured I hope we see Cannon at 157 vs. Rutgers.

Nice win for Birden vs #12 Scoles and Shumate beats #11 Braunagel. And Jesse is a beast!

Very good performances by Bouzakis (wrestled very well in taking Byrd to SV), Mendez, Dylan (probably his best win in some time), Birden, and Feldman.

125 Should've been able to turn that guy from top with that cradle.

133 I like the way Bouzakis wrestles but he does make mistakes. Byrd set him up nice for the SV takedown. He set a trap and Nic took the bait.

141 Jesse is a Manbeast; he looks so good. Olympic level medalist right now.

149 D'Emilio wrestled a smarter match than Webster.

157 Scrambling is not Paddy's strength and needs to keep the match confined to his strengths. It reminded me of the Flo match against O'Toole all those years ago. If he gets stuck on his knees with a guy that can turn a corner. Let me rephrase, don't get stuck on your knees.

165 Birden is going to be a 3x AA. Could AA this year if he can get out off bottom. Those reattacks he hit were lit. Awesome.

174 Carson does a great job. Needs about 10 matches during the season and not get hurt. Show up to conference and NCAAs healthy and get on that podium.

184 Wrestling a super high pace and throwing big moves at someone takes a lot of effort and can wear you out. Needs to evolve and figure some alternative ways of attacking which are more skill than conditioning.

197 Shumate is growing in confidence, and it shows. Still has detail work to do as his position started to falter at the end. He did 6:30 of great wrestling. He can beat Poz tomorrow and be ranked top 12.

285 Feldman wrestled smart and conservative. No wow factor but no mistakes either.

Let's take the WABAC machine to Kaleb Romero's freshman year.

He lost to a wrestler from NC St because the other wrestler turned the corner when he shot and wrestled from his knees.

He evolved into a higher-level wrestler.

His better version of wrestling reflected a binary decision of shoot and finish or don't shoot. While maintaining integrity of position for the whole match.

You can't revert back to allowing positions to happen that don't give advantage.

Feldman did a nice job of only entertaining positions that he wanted.

It's about conditioning your mind to do the right thing every single time.

Coaches will say silly things like, you have to get grittier or tougher when their wrestler loses. That's equal to try harder.

It is always about discipline and resolute commitment to position.

One is emotionally based and calls on your manhood whereas the other is objective and identifies the actions that need to be taken. Those two things mean very different things in the mind of a wrestler.

Penn State has this figured out and has moved onto tactics that are meant to delete their opponent's position. I watched a match in slo mo with one of the Mirasola twins at the Southern Scuffle, 14 setups in 20 seconds. It was kind of awesome. The opponent gets worn out mentally reacting to so many things that they eventually make a mistake with their hands, feet or both. Same thing Messenbrink does.
