Discussion Topic: Habit and Addiction
Rex Holman added to this discussion on May 16, 2025

Going to an AA meeting (as a nursing student) opened my eyes to the savage nature of addiction.

A lot of the sharing amongst the group focused on it starting as an occurrence, became a habit and then the whole day was planned around drinking alcohol.

I heard a lot of desperation and just listened. People were opening up about a problem they had which had taken over their lives. It ended in failed marriages, job loss and jail time.

There are lots of types of addiction. I would say that any type of addiction that causes significant damage is a negative.

Who remembers the Lawrence Taylor prostitution case? It is what brought sex trafficking to the national forefront. It made some of us more aware of a problem.

Couple that with a former UA police lieutenant who in 2018 was arrested for solicitation of prostitution. That one shocked me as much as Kyle Snyder. I didn't know either of them other than as superficial aquaintances.

I don't expect much in the way of personal standards from professional football player. But a police officer and a wrestler (that in a way represents our small community) hits a little different.

One other thought; I find myself saying, I like the way that actor portrayed that character in the show. It's easy to assign the same quality to that actor.

Maybe we should be just saying, I like the way that athlete competes in the arena; but that's it.

When I met my heroes in this sport. I'd say it was 50/50 whether I really liked them or thought highly of them. You realize quickly that most people are flawed (myself included); it's just a matter of whether you thought that person was authentic and helpful or self-centered and ego driven.
