Some of you are highly knowledgeable regarding the best high school prospects. Who should the Bucks be recruiting? Are there in state prospects in particular beside Grey Burnett?

Hank,
I am all in on Grey and would bring his dad as an assistant.
It worked with Carr, and I would argue that the Burnetts have been responsible for developing Ohio greats like the Steibers, Tessari, Phillips, and hundreds of others.

Too late on Burnett.as coach. If you were ever going to bring him in it would be to get Marcus blaze. That ship has passed. Grey once again is a good prospect not great. Ohio state can get him without bringing his dad in. Penn state, Oklahoma state, and Iowa he would have little chance of making lineups there. I would be shocked if Ohio state didn’t land him. Logan is very close to him and the staff spent a lot of time in perrysburg already.

Grey Burnett lost to Munaretto at Ironman this year and munaretto finished third while Burnett finished 7th. Oklahoma state, Iowa, and Penn state are not going to barely be looking at Burnett. Did anyone see who Ohio state was competing with to get Munaretto.? Illinois and Indiana. People on this board seem to have unrealistic expectations currently for Burnett. I see him as a guy similar to demilio. Couple time all American but never challenging for a NCAA title. For team titles you need finalists and bonus points. Don’t get me wrong I would love to have him but he just isn’t currently a guy who steps in and an immediate huge impact guy.

The problem is Ohio doesn’t have much top level talent currently. Hopefully rowlands turns out to be like his dad bc that’s probably a lock to land but currently is not at that level.

Columbus has a few kids I’m really hoping to get there to be top prospects . Webber, wurster, Boyle, Rowlands, kharchla, and heskett. These kids are all young so have a couple years to see where they are at. I wouldn’t call them can’t miss prospects at this point however. Ohio state is going to have to depend on getting kids in state to be very good and wanting to be buckeyes to contend again under the current state of wrestling.

Also this is the new era of nil. You don’t have to hire the dad anymore to get the kid. You can now just pay the kid directly. Burnett is not a difference maker as a coach at the next level. He has great students through his career but isn’t going to bring in top level talent. Logan trained through him so probably don’t need another coach teaching the same things also. Coleman will probably leave the rtc and Sasso will take over is the only coaching change I see until Ryan’s contract is done.

I continue to be confused by this opinion of Burnett.

Saylor has him 6th overall in the junior class.

2X state champ through his sophomore season. Tech, tech major, 5-1 in this year's state tournament.

7th at Ironman as a sophomore. Not sure why that is a negative. Lost 2-1 in UTB to Manuretto who is a year older in class (no clue of actual age).

Just won Central Regionals with 4 techs, including a 10-0 tech over a multiple time IL state champ. Also won the age group US Open in April.

What does it take to be considered elite?

Looking at blemishes you could point to Fargo last year where he was 6-2, I think.

How would you compare him to the older Blaze? Another Perrysburg, Burnett trained athlete who was not recruited by the big boys but just lost in the national finals as a SO?

Saylor is the top HS ranker in the country. 6th overall should mean elite. Just my two cents.

I agree that Willy, for all his bluster, is very good in his assessments.

If the standard is someone at the Blaze/Bassett/Duke/Forrest level, you're leaving yourself very few recruits to be excited about. You're not even going to be able to fill out a roster, for that matter.

Just look at the NCAA champions last year and their final big board rankings:

Robinson - 46th
Byrd - 18th
Mendez - 3rd
Lovett - 16th
Taylor - 30th
Mesenbrink - 18th
Hamiti - 6th
Starocci - 9th
Buchanan - NR
Hendrickson - 40th

Other than Mendez, you could've used the same "he lost to this guy, and this guy, who lost to this guy..." argument to talk yourself out of them.

How is Nebraska doing more with less? It's not just about getting the highest ranked guys. It's about identifying the right guys that will succeed in your environment.

Once again I would love to land Burnett and think Ohio state is a huge favorite to get him. He listed hunter Stieber in his bio previously as his favorite wrestler. He is very close to the Steibers. I don’t think there is any way Logan would let him get away. Also his dad would be in very close proximity as a positive.

What I mean by he’s not elite is he is not an absolute can’t miss prospect that every program will be drooling over. Duke, Lockett, blaze, Bassett, Forrest, miller are those kind of recruits. He’s in a tier below those type of guys. Joey blaze is a good example that he would be comparable to. Those are the type of guys that Ohio state actually has a shot at when the big guns are not having a bidding war over.

Him and Dominic munaretto are very comparable wrestlers currently. No one is going crazy over him. Grey is also a year older for his age so I don’t really consider what class any of these high schoolers graduate in as a huge factor. Need to keep the best wrestlers in Ohio and he is probably right now the best wrestler Ohio has to offer however. Loc Webber, Tommy wurster, and Rowland are soon to be sophomores to keep an eye out for this year however and all from Columbus.

This was an oddball year for the NCAA championships. 4/10 champs were transfer portal guys that went to the big three. The big three are going to get every big name in portal. Ohio state can not depend on transfer portal champion level contenders that developed late. Once they develop they will be getting paid elsewhere. Wyoming, cal poly, Air Force, and Wisconsin got those four champs so no one really recruited them except hamiti which I believe stayed at home. Even Robinson was an Ironman champ but I think he lost at state somehow to hurt his stock.

Again I said Burnett is a good prospect and would love to have him. Do you think Penn state, Iowa, and Oklahoma state are going to be bidding away to get him? The answer is no they aren’t. That’s the difference between these prospects at this point and what level I would access him. He is ranked 18 on Flo and feel that’s probably close to correct. Great pickup for buckeyes but a room guy at these $$$$ paying programs.

2024 NCAA champs
Figorao #1
Vito #4
Jesse #3
Henson #7
Haines #9….would have been higher but skipped senior year
Carr #5
Starroci #9
Keikenson #14
Brooks #2
Kerkvliet #1
6/10 are top five guys and all top 14.

After watching Grey at Central Regionals and seeing the people watching him, I'm all in on him being a Buckeye.

FYI, David Taylor spent many days at the barn. I don't want to get in a back-and-forth about whether Stieber or Burnett is a better coach; it's not even close.

I would take Burnetts, Haverdel, Izzy, Palazoo over most of the college coaches today. Yes, Stieber is a better draw being a 4x and world champ, but to develop the skills and mental acumen to be a champion is why you hire a Burnett.

In-state wise I do believe Burnett is a must get for Ohio St. Shawger high on the list for me but not 100% convinced he's in that blue chip category yet. I hope i'm wrong. Keep an eye on Cooper Driscoll from St. Ed this year too.

Upcoming sophomores, I think both Rowlands and Webber are gonna be blue chippers. Hope the Buckeyes are already recruiting them. Wurster and the Horak brothers are a few others I am keeping an eye on.

I know they aren’t coaches but PSU fans are really high on Burnett and want him in a PSU singlet.

Most assume he will be a lion because of Blaze, not sure I agree with that but who knows.

Michael Boyle from Bishop Watterson should be high on the Bucks’ list. He’d fit in nicely at 285 after Feldman leaves.
