Flo posted a story about the 2003 National Duals that were hosted in Columbus. This got me feeling kind of nostalgic.
I moved to Columbus in 1999 and since then have had the pleasure of witnessing some awesome wrestling at St. Johns, the Covelli, and occasionally the Schott. While it's hard to pick one, here are some of my favorites.
2003-In the semis of National Duals hosted in Columbus the Buckeyes are down by 4 to Oklahoma going into the Heavyweight match. Tommy goes to overtime with Leonce Crump (who had already beaten Tommy once that year). While Rowlands is in the process of securing the winning takedown Crump stops wrestling and Tommy takes him to his back and gets the fall to win the dual. During the subsequent celebration Russ Hellickson tears his ALC.
2007-Hometown boy T.J. Enright upsets #1 ranked Nick Simmons taking him down with one second left in overtime. This is the loudest I ever heard at St. John's and I was high fiving and chest bumping people I didn't know.
2008-Jaggers pins Jake Strayer who at the time was ranked above him, to win the dual meet against Penn State 22-19. The match started at 149 so this was the final match of the dual and a decision would have tied the match (not sure who had criteria). I believe J was down when he pinned him. Such a gamer!
2012-#7 Ohio State Upsets #2 Iowa 21-9. Buckeyes freshman have numerous big upsets to pull it off. Redshirt freshman Logan Stieber beats down Tony Ramos (who was ranked higher at the time) causing Ramos to freak out. True Freshman Hunter Stieber beats #3 ranked NCAA Runner-up Montell Marion. Freshman Cam Tessari beats Mike Kelly. Redshirt freshman Josh Demas upsets Derek St. John. Freshman Derek Garcia takes out #6 Mike Evans. These guys fed off each other and the momentum resulted in some crazy upsets. Some of these guys didn't realize their full potential due to injuries and other factors. 3 years later the Bucks win an NCAA title led by Stieber and company!
2019-2020-While it's hard to pick one moment, but a legend was born in the first year at the Covelli Center. That legend's name was Gas Tank Gary Traub. Everyone likes an underdog and Gary epitomized that ethos. With a mean snatch single leg, superior conditioning, and incredible grit and mental toughness, Gary found a way to get it done! The fact that he looked like a 40 year old steel worker while doing it made it all the more special.
These are some of my favorites. What are yours?

If I remember right, wasn't the Jaggers pin a defensive one? I know everyone including J went nuts. And I think Tommy & Crump were in OT, so Crump thought the match was over but Tommy continued to take him to his back as Crump relaxed, thinking the match was over with a TD.

That is a really good list. A few years ago at the Virginia Tech dual didn't the first three Ohio State wrestlers pin their opponents? That was key to winning the dual.

Absolutely right. Strayer had both boots in and J arched back and caught his head!

National Duals perhaps the same year as Rowlands over Crump, I watched Keaton Anderson win back to back over Shane Roller and Gray Maynard. He was losing both matches 4-1 at the end of the first, forced a single leg scramble in the second period both times and ended up with his cradle. Just incredible to see as all three were high school legends. Anderson was so much fun to watch his senior season.

I would add to that the next year (I think), Keaton moving up to 157 as a senior. Minnesota came to town and he brought down the house when he beat defending national champion Luke Becker. I think Keaton was ranked number one from that point until the postseason.

Is there a video of the 2012 dual against Iowa out there somewhere? I'm pretty sure I watched it on BTN at the time but I'd love to rewatch it. If not the whole dual, at least the Stieber vs Ramos match.

I'm not sure if the video exist as I was lucky enough to be at St. John's that night. Another distinct memory from that match is that after he lost to Stieber, Ramos put his warm up and hoodie on and did sprints up and down the exit ramp for the rest of the match (or at least that's how I remember it).
