Champions of the National Duals!

Does anyone have their overall record for the weekend? 40 matches…35-5? 34-6???

There were a handful of BIG wins with a few gutsy performances along the way.

Up next: three duals and then the Collegiate Duals in Tennessee.

Go Buckeyes!

Since you asked - their record this weekend was 31-9, with 5 of those losses being in OT, and NONE of the losses gave up bonus points. That alone - not giving up bonus points - is a sign of a good dual team, but everything they did on top of that was great. Momentum is a real thing, and it sure seems like they fed off of each other.

I love duals, and I remember when I watched Mizzou beat Iowa in the finals of the 2015 National Duals - this is right up there with that (you can tell I love beating Iowa - except Iowa vs PSU these days...).

In my 20 years of watching the Bucks, I don't remember a weekend when they performed so well as a complete team. This was something to behold. Hats off to the wrestlers and the coaching staff!

And separate from that... the event in general was spectacular. National Duals always has been (it's been a while since it happened), but this one stands above in terms of accessibility, production quality. I really only watched the Bucks duals + the Iowa / Ok State dual, which was also a spectacular dual.

I hope this continues in the coming years, and hats off to Chad Richison for forking up the money to enable such a great event.

Some thoughts:

-Davino looks like a national title contender. Obviously he took it to Ayala. He had a win over Blaze several years ago. I would like to see how that goes now. I think we'll have the chance.

-Mendez is an absolute dog! Impressive all weekend. Found the last takedown against Hardy and absolutely broke Bailey (after he was getting chippy early in the match).

-I love the way Brandon Cannon wrestles. A dynamic scorer from any position, can scramble, and he can ride and turn people.

-Awesome win for Feldman against Ferrari. Very strategic as I don't think you want to try to attack Ferrari's legs and get into a scramble. Hard handfighting and looking for your spots is the way to beat him.

-A couple things I really liked is that the Bucks continued to work for bonus points and did a good job of getting off the bottom. I feel like bottom and mat wrestling in general was a weakness for years but it has improved in recent years and now looks to be a strength.

Loved the final vs Iowa. They had bonus points in most of their wins and had a lot of close matches that they lost. I missed the 125 match because I did not know it was televised on ESPN2, but they showed the Bouzakis pin in replay. And if Fishback had blocked Ferrari's roll on the attempted TD, he may have beaten him in regulation instead of losing in OT. Again all of the losing matches were close, which normally doesn't happen with Iowa. Good start to the season.

Rex talks a lot about the importance of training with purpose. And that's what we saw. Everyone in the lineup seemed both aggressive and yet wrestling with intelligence.

Kudos to the staff and the team. We saw motivated performances by well coached athletes over and over again. It's a pleasure to root for this group of athletes.

I'm still trying to find my eyeballs as they popped out of my head when Davino hit Ayala with that peakout.

That was a thing of beauty. You don't see it often at this level.

What a performance!

It's a long season and this will be a hard to top. How do you make this the starting point and not the peak? Or would you be satisfied if this was The Season's Peak?
