Probably well known to everyone else but me on here but a PD article (which I miserably cannot post the link to) discusses the fabrication of wrestlers’ records prior to sectionals and that it has been going on for several years.
Some with losing records had winning records submitted. Others had better records submitted.
It also indicated that record submissions were basically on an honor system. Odd, since the state restricts how many matches a wrestler can have a year. One would think that would have better oversight.

Really scuzzy move by a program which has no need to cheat.

I don't understand why anyone would do this. Obviously, it's dishonest and it hurts the sport, but it seems to me to be a big risk for almost zero reward.
When I got into coaching way back when, I don't remember feeling the importance of seeding as strong as other people do, particularly here in Central Ohio. If you've never been to a seeding meeting in Central Ohio, these guys take this shit very seriously. When I was in high school and when I coached, I didn't care at all about seeds. I get that there are good draws and bad draws, but the wrestlers still have to go out there and win to advance through the State Tourney process. I've always thought seeds matter for a very small percentage of wrestlers.
Am I wrong on this? Because, like I said, people take this stuff very seriously. I'm open to changing my mind if someone feels passionately about it and can explain the virtue (not of cheating, but of the importance of seeding in general).

I guess how much it matters depends on your goals.
If your sight is set on making the state tournament, IMO a sectional seed is pretty meaningless. If you're good enough to go to state, the odds of not placing in the top 4 at sectionals is pretty small--I know there are exceptions, but they are rare.
If your goal is to make it district tournament and you're not clearly a top 2 guy in the sectional... then sectional seeding might matter a lot, depending on the field in your bracket.
What I totally agree with, though.... the risk/reward is not there for this. Aside from the moral issue of being dishonest... as a coach, you stand to lose waaay more than you stand to gain by being caught at this, and it's very easy to be caught.

I've not heard anything other than what the article said. I'm not in the DI Boy's wrestling world. But I'm moving my kid if his/her coach does this. Hank is right -- Scuzzy.
Winning doesn't surpass integrity. This is only done by a coach/program that HAS to win. Coach's with integrity WANT to win. Massive difference.
Wrestling has impacted every aspect of my life - literally, but it's just a sport.

I’ve ran a sectional wrestling site the last five years, and most years we’ve had coaches get called out by other coaches for either falsifying or submitting inaccurate records. Either through intentional means or through incompetence it happens all the time, every year. Coach Marinelli has been arguably the best, and most successful, coach in central Ohio for three decades. He doesn’t need to cheat to have success. I’m going to guess that Mark is probably pretty hands off when it comes to stats and record keeping. Ultimately, that responsibility still sits with the head coach. In the modern age of real time record keeping, and easy access to results, it’s pretty asinine that this still happens every year. It’s a wide spread issue, has been for decades, and is not limited to Olentangy Liberty.
