Cesar Alvan from Columbia changed the course of his match with LaDarion Lockett with a leg sweep. One position. All the marbles.

Caliendo could've landed that side headlock if he knew the position just a smidge better. Needed to make an adjustment as he rolled through.

Leg passes look more and more like ankle locks.

Mat wrestling looks more and more like jiu-jitsu, especially when defending leg attacks.

I'm kicking myself for forgetting the match, but somebody hit a pretty clean butterfly sweep also. I'm a big fan of all grappling, and the guys who train cross styles tend to be the most fun. You can definitely see sole judo in P.J. Duke's background, he uses the footsteps and variants of hip throws so well. I think I've even seen him hit some kosoto fun. I hope Hipolito comes back healthy for Oklahoma next year, his wrestling seems very creating due to his bjj background.

One of my favorites will always be David Terao, who placed I think 4th for American about 10 years ago and was a big fan favorite for his run. He's done international level judo competition and has a black belt under Ryan Hall, one of jiu jitsu's great innovators. What a complete martial artist/grappler.

Terao (AMER) became a fan favorite during his run at NCAAs that year. The fans' cheering could be heard on the TV. Every move he executed was a thing of beauty and had the fans locked in.

Great memory!

Good call on Judo and Terao. Lennox Wolak, Steve Mocco, Jason Morris integrated Judo into their styles as well.
Not a whole lot of Judo schools around whereas Jiu Jitsu seems to be in every strip mall.

You're correct about the latter. I started bjj at one of the few serious judo schools in NEO, and there weren't many companions to it around. One of my daughters competed, and competitors came from all over for a relatively small tournament, seems to be a small world.

There are soo many guys incorporating movements into their wrestling that seem to have some jiu-jitsu influence. It is beautiful. Most of the scrambles and leg passes I am seeing could easily be turned into Heel hooks, and knee bars. That headlock Caliendo tried is easily turned into a choke. Pretty sweet, and good on him for letting it fly. Although, it got shut down pretty easily.
The Judo influence is there, and probably always has been. Everyone loves a nice foot sweep or a big throw. I love that guys are trying it and executing it at the highest level. I really enjoy Helen Maroulis's Foot sweeps. She is also immersing herself into some BJJ, who knows what she may try on the highest level. Great post Rex

Derek Oney has entered the chat!

If we're not careful, we're going to end up with a sweat session in Oney's garage!

Chuck - you take Rex, I'll grab Oney.

Helen's footsweeps and the way she integrates them into her wrestling sequences are a work of art, she has some of the best technique I've ever seen in that area, probably the best. Her slide by to footsweep, oh momma.
