Discussion Topic: Metcalf replaces Dresser at ISU
Pat Costilow added to this discussion on April 10, 2026

Big news today, and i think a fantastic move by Iowa State. Dresser is a great program architect, but isn't drawing any recruits in. Metcalf is one of the most dominant figures of the millennial generation, and lots of kids grew up watching him. It sounds like Dresser is staying in the program, I joked that he will focus on the portal full time, but I would imagine he has donor relation duties, he has been a great fundraiser. Bug, decisive move by Iowa State.

Curious if the Ohio State AD is thinking in the back of his mind this could be a good move for TR soon.

Per Flo, Dresser just released a statement saying:
"My contract at Iowa State expires on June 30, 2029!
I'm not leaving just yet."

So not so fast...

I think he would excel in that role also. The splash hire would be Dake. He is an icon, has Ohio ties, and would be able to recruit alongside Taylot and Cael.

After NCAA's I posted about whether or not Ohio State should be looking for a new coach. One of our many intelligent posters (I forget who) pointed out that unless someone like Dake was an extraordinary fundraiser, there was not likely to be a replacement for Tom Ryan who'd do a better job. I tend to agree.

I'm not against the Buckeyes making a move. But it has to make sense. Unfortunately, at this point in time, fundraising is a huge aspect of any significant D1 wrestling program.

In the scenario I'm imagining, Tom stays on staff and is responsible for that while Dake is the young face/head coach of the program, which it sounds like may be the dynamic in Ames going forward.

"Hi Kyle....this is Logan and J and Bo. Kyle is your new boss."

Again, I see your point, but there'd be a lot of details to iron out.

If a new coach was hired I presume he would bring in his own staff. Especially because at least one of the guys mentioned would likely be a candidate for head coach as well. This was the scenario when Coach Ryan was hired. He was able to keep Tommy Rowlands on staff but Tommy was only 25 and still wrestling internationally.

My guess is that Dresser moves into a Director of Operations role. It has been rumored heavily that Iowa State will announce a women's team shortly. Dresser could coordinate both programs.

Iowa State Ad basically alluded to this when women's gymnastics was dropped. Iowa girls high school wrestling is booming. Not sure what other sports are being considered.

Interesting. ...on a few levels.

"Tom Ryan’s major flaw is not competing w Cale: That is everyone’s flaw. I understand that Ryan can do better as a coach, but I’m not sure Jordan Burroughs or Kyle Dake can do any better with the lack of funding Ohio State has for the wrestling program. David Taylor has the name at the other OSU, but the funding came along with it, which is making him successful there. You said he’s done as well as he can, but again why should the athletic department look for another coach because we will see the same result with lack of funding?" Sam Delio

Worth a second read if you haven't seen it before. Sam nails it.

I really like Tom. By all logical measurements he has been awesome.

Very much agree that the natural tendency is to chase Cael and now Taylor, and the thought that a new coach could help.

It could also be careful what you wish for. The team is top 3-5 every single year. This is incredible success.

But I take exception to the supposed lack of funding or disadvantage poor Ohio State has when it comes to financial support. Come on, man.

Every google search I did shows OSU is a top funded college athletic program. Money is pouring into the Big Ten, witness by the recent athletic success in almost all sports.

If Cael and Taylor have better donors, fine. But without seeing financial statements I'd be willing to bet Iowa is handsomely funded by boosters and they can't catch Tom and Ohio State.

It's unlikely OSU will catch Penn State while Cael is there. Stinks, but true. But Finishing top 3-5 almost every year with a punchers chance to snag a title? 70 other programs would beg for this success.

When the NCAA's came to Cleveland, I was helping operate the video review equipment. At least two of the guys from the company who owns the equipment were from Oklahoma. They are wrestling guys. They had some interesting stories about how the money donor switched from Oklahoma to Okie State and how David Taylor became part of the mix.
Basically it was, if I am bringing the money, I am getting to make the rules and choose the coach. Oklahoma would not agree to it and Okie State did.

You can dig through if you want.

NIL deals generally aren't public so that piece, at least for now, is left to reporting which is spotty at best.

Ohio RTC is in a position where they need to fundraise to cover expenses every year. NLWC has 3x the budget and nearly $12MM in assets as of their most recent filing, probably closer to $15 million now. Hawkeye RTC somewhere around $5MM and 2x the budget. Cowboy RTC had a huge cash injection recently, coinciding with Chad Richinson's arrival as the largest booster in all of college wrestling--also backstopping D.T.'s 6 year ~$6.5MM deal (before incentive bonuses).

Also, just for the record, Ohio State hasn't outplaced Iowa at the NCAA tournament since 2019. Beat them in duals this year, sure, but beyond that Iowa has outperformed for over half a decade.

Fascinating. Oklahoma State seemed like the perfect choice. I had no idea the plan was to invest the money in the Sooners.
