Discussion Topic: Humphrey, Triggas win Titles
Hank Kornblut added to this discussion on April 13, 2008

Buckeyes Reece Humphrey and Nikko Triggas both won University Nationals Titles this weekend.

Triggas was Greco champ at 121.5 and will probably end up nationally ranked as a result.

Humphrey was freestyle champ at 138.5 and 3rd in Greco.

Kent's Dustin Kilgore made it to the Semis at 185 before losing to Jake Herbert. He ended up 5th. I believe Dan Mitcheff placed as well.

Mitcheff had a great tournament, finishing 5th.

Tim Samson from OU finished 7th in 96KG class.

On TrackWrestling you can filter tournament results by team, which is extremely convenient.

How do you guys see Triggas matching up with Durlacher, Hazewinkel, Mango and other top level Greco lightweights? Triggas is building quite a resume in Greco with 2 Fargo titles and now this. Has he had any elite level training in Greco or is he just natural?

Wouldn't presume to know, but Triggas obviously has a knack for Greco-Roman.

Nikko won the Jr. Pan Am Games in Greco just before he moved to Ohio. He is much more accomplished in Greco but, he is no slouch in freestyle. Nikko trains with Mark Halvorson he is the California Greco National Team head coach and a very respected USA wrestling Jr. Greco Coach. He has spent a lot of time at the OTC also. As far as matching up with the big three: not yet. He doesn't quite have the size or man strength that those three have, but he's getting there. As you all in Ohio have learned by now Nikko is a monster on top and in par terre he can turn most anyone.

Nikko was fun to watch this year, and for a true freshman he did good. I noticed by the end of the season he was riding and turning guys he couldn't at the start of the season, He is still on that "learning curve" as Joe Heskett calls it, and I look forward to watching his progress in the coming years. As he gets the strength to ride and turn and finish guys, he will be a force at the lower weights. No matter what the score, it is nice to know he has the ability to end the match with a pin at anytime. And with Lou Rosselli coaching the lightweights, OSU is going to be tough. Just within 2 years of him coaching here, OSU got an NCAA Champ (J Jaggers, 141), a University Greco Champ (Nikko, 121 lbs.) & a University Freestyle Champ (138.75 lbs.) in Reece Humphrey. That room next season has got to be electric <excited> .

Rudy: Nikko is fabulous on top. With continued improvement on his feet, he will rapidly become an AA candidate.

Jack: As you mentioned, Coach Rosselli has had a big impact on the lower wts. Now, think about the light weight talent currently in Ohio: Gus Sako, Jamie Clark, Hunter Stieber, Logan Stieber, Cam Tessari, Zach Neibert, Brad Squire, Seth Horner, David Habat --oops--forgot Collin Palmer and David Taylor...It's obscene for one state to have so many good light weights around the same time. With Lou Rosselli at Ohio State, the biggest issue for the Bucks is going to be deciding which ones to recruit most heavily. Hopefully some of these kids really grow.
