Kilgore wins FILA Junior National Championship
LAS VEGAS – Kent State freshman Dustin Kilgore continues to build an impressive resume.
The redshirt freshman went 27-1 with five open tournament championships this season for the Golden Flashes. Now, he’s added a FILA Junior National title to his repertoire. In the final match of the 84 kg (185 pounds) weight class, Kilgore knocked off 2008 NCAA All-American Kirk Smith from Boise State. The win sends the Berea, Ohio product into a best-of-three match series against the winner of a mini-tournament in late May for the chance to advance to the World Championships in Greece. He is the first KSU grappler to win a FILA Junior National title.
In the tournament in Las Vegas, Kilgore recorded falls of his first three opponents – all in the first period of action. In the semi-finals he defeated Minnesota’s Sonny Yohn before edging Smith in the finale. Earlier this month, Kilgore was named a University Freestyle All-American.
This year, in his redshirt freshman campaign, Kilgore won 27 of his 28 matches, eight of them by fall. He won five open tournament titles and finished second at another. He will be entering his first year of varsity competition next fall with the Golden Flashes.

Well everyone knew that he was quite a talented high school wrestler, and now he's taken it up a notch in his transition to college. Kudos to both him and the coaching staff at Kent State for an outstanding redshirt year. Now let's hope he's able to continue this constant improvement on his way All-American status an NCAA gold. Could the weight gain be a factor in how well he's done?

He certainly seems to be better at the higher weightclass but he has also had a year of college wrestling. It will be interesting to see him go at it with Mike Pucillo in the dual.

To me, he is a legitimate AA threat.

I second that, immediate AA threat and if the learning curve continues I see him as a possible national champ down the road.
The only questionable result from the past year was a 7-2 loss to Caponi. Not a terrible loss, but I would take Kilgore in a rematch based on recent results.

While the offseason FS results have shown to be very predictive over time, even more predictive will be his performance in early season opens next year (his opens of 07-08 are certainly a good start).
Wins over wrestlers like Yohn and Smith show that he certainly has the goods to be an AA candidate. Repeating those in November and December will mean all the more.
Congrats to Dustin on a very good weekend showing - especially for someone who was not known as a FS guy in HS (no Fargo appearances on my recollection).
