Discussion Topic: Olympic Redshirts - opinions?
Ethan Moore added to this discussion on May 2, 2008
Since we have intelligent conversation on this forum, I was wondering what you all think about the use of the Olympic RS.
There are often people who take them who little or no real shot of making the Olympic team, but it does give them an extra year to train and perhaps help their school's roster.
What are your thoughts on this? Should there be a more rigorous decision making process to grant an Olympic RS? Or is it just smart decision making by the schools who take advantage of this?
I am on the fence on this, can't come to a conclusion either way. Interested in what others think.

Welp, I'm out! <smile>
he he he...
Actually, I like the opportunity it affords, but would hate to see it taken advantage of by certain members of any team.

I believe there are currently specific criteria wrestlers mush meet to take an ORS but I'm not sure what the criteria are. I'm sure someone on here will know.

I personally think that the Olympic redshirt rule has at times been, maybe this is too strong a word, "abused". However, if the criteria are going to be so undefined, who am I to fault programs/wrestlers for doing so.
I would be one to advocate that there must be some discernable criteria for Olympic redshirt (beyond the NCAA says so). Be it something as simple as you must earn qualification for the Olympic Trials; or something more rigorous like you must finish in a position to be part of the World Team "ladder"; or (I think this is in between) your finish must put you in a position to receive "funding" for the OTC.
Having kids taking a second redshirt goes against the "spirit" of the 5 to do 4 clock rule.
