Discussion Topic: South Dakota says NO to post-match handshake
Scott Shaw added to this discussion on May 9, 2008

This is a link to an article in a South Dakota paper that says that wrestlers will no longer be allowed to shake the opposing coaches hand after a match.

I know that this topic has been covered before, but what are your thoughts on the OHSAA implementing a similar policy? As a head coach, I never made my team shake the opposing coaches hand. I left it up to the individual kid. It was more important to me that they shake their opponent's hand and then come and shake mine and look me in the eye when doing it. Shaking the other coaches hand can lead to trouble.

Don't get me wrong, 99.9% of the time nothing will happen. I have seen some completely angry coaches after matches that have shown nothing but respect to my wrestler when he went to shake their hand and I have had angry kids do the same, but that feeling is always in your belly that something might happen. I think, why bother for something that is so unneccesary anyway. If anyone shakes the opposing coach's hand, it should be me, not my wrestler.

I know that some coaches are completely against it. I think that I remember Claymont not shaking hands because of an incident many years ago where an opposing wrestler to a shot at one of their coaches. I know a few other teams are the same way.

Just my 2 cents, what do you guys think?

I don't understand why wrestlers don't shake the coaches hand before the match. Why make an athlete shake a coaches hand after a difficult loss, it just stupid to me.

I, personally, agree with this, specifically in duals. The problem is, parents get so enraged about this topic and they don't realize that there are problems when you put an angry coach and an angry teenager in direct contact.

I remember during a year when I coached, I instructed my team during a dual meet to not shake the other coaches hands after the matches since we would shake hands after the dual... I literally had a parent come down onto the floor screaming for his son to shake hands and blaming me for being a poor sport. It was not pretty.

The contest is between the competitors on the mat.

The competitors shake hands as a sign of good sportsmanship before and after the match. I like that and I wouldn't change it. It teaches the lesson of sportsmanship very well.

That said, I've never understood why a wrestler is supposed to shake the hand of his opponent's coaches... especially after a match when emotions are high for everyone, coaches are trying to get the next wrestler ready, etc.
