I don't know how much interest there is in wrestlers and former wrestlers competing in mixed martial arts, but several NE Ohio wrestlers were in action in Sheffield on Friday night during the Superior Cage Fighting event. Elyria's Zack Goins, who will be a senior next season, scored a 27-second KO, former Amherst state qualifier Dominic Jones won a unanimous decision and Josh Gregorek -- who wrestled for Southview High and Mount Union College -- also won a unanimous decision.

Good for them, any info about more fights around the area with this organization, and possibly more former wrestlers?

Wrestling is the original martial art. It is a style of MMA.

Naturally, wrestling and the fighting styles billed as MMA go together well.

They have two more fights scheduled at the same site this summer. The info can be accessed at www.superiorcagefighting.com. Goins won't be fighting at the next event as he is cutting weight and training for state and national freestyles, but former Elyria wrestler Brandon Perrott should be on the next card and several other area wrestlers and former wrestlers will probably be fighting also.

Check this guy out. Dinos Angelas. He was a stud at the University of Fidnley, he is a trainer over at my gym.

I see former CSU wrestler Gerald Harris is also on the UFC show.

I hate to correct you Tony (actually, I love to correct you) but CB only won one title.

Wrestlers have done well in MMA for many years now. Mark Coleman's wins in the early UFC were classic and began the Ground and Pound style. Dan Severn, Coleman, Randy Couture, Dan Henderson and more have paved the way for current MMA stars that wrestled like Matt Hughes, Gray Maynard, Rashard Evans, and Frankie Edgar (among others.) Matt Hughes, Randy Couture, and Mark Coleman will go down as some of the best ever to fight MMA.

Overall, there are actually too many wrestlers that succeed at MMA to name on this forum, but I listed a few of my favorites. Even non-wrestlers like George St. Pierre (the current UFC Welterweight champion from Montreal) see the benefits of solid wrestling in MMA as he trained with the Canadian National Freestyle team in his preparation for his title fight with Matt Hughes at UFC 79 and his title defense against Matt Serra in UFC 83.

Ya know Coach Shaw, I meant to check the record books but I figured that I would go with my gut feeling. I guess my gut feeling was wrong this time. Ehh, first statistical mistake I think that I have made. I guess nobody's perfect. haha
