Discussion Topic: "Potential" Ohio State Lineup for 08/09
Scott Nicola added to this discussion on May 15, 2008

Given the kids that have already been signed and potential transfers that the internet has been buzzing about this is the lineup I would like to see next year. I fully recognize that the Bucks may not get any of these transfers but it is fun to speculate.

125-Triggas-Will challenge for AA status in his second year. Had some nice wins last year and was ferocious on top. Will be better on his feet and more consistant this year. Harrington and Touris provide depth.

133-Humphrey-Sounds like Hump will be here. If weight is under control he has the tools to be an AA. Presumably he moves up to 141 after Jaggers graduates. Livingston, Zamaria and Henry provide depth.

141-Jaggers-Jaggers will defend his NCAA title. Hump, Messeral and possibly Jameson are other options.

149-Palmer-Palmer seemed to be the only guy at NCAA's who had a legitimate shot at knocking off Metcalf. Jameson and Kusar provide depth.

157-Johnstone-Based on Coach Ryan's interview, it seems like Johstone is the favorite to hold down the spot. I think if he has continued to put on good weight he has a shot at AA. Nemec would be an outstanding backup or a capable starter.

165-Sponseller-I think Colt comes out with even more of a vengence next year. Think about how much the kid has improved every year and imagine how good he is going to be this year. Nemec, and Campbell provide depth here.

174-Rella-Obviously things would have to happen for Dave Rella to transfer and be eligible next year, but what the heck. I think Rella fits the style of wrestler that Coach Ryan likes (tough guys who come after their opponent) and would have a great workout situation with Sponseller, Pucillo, Nemec, and Magrum all around his weight. Magrum, Finnicum and a bunch of mystery transfers will add depth.

184-Pucillo-Pucillo and Jake Herbert head for a titanic struggle. Wes Bergman or possibly Magrum could provide depth.

197-Weakley-Weakley showed some good things despite having a tough season. I think he will be considerably better this year. Can Heavyweight recruit Pat Walsh challenge here?

285-Corey Morrison is the frontrunner here and he will be greatly improved over 2 years ago. DiAgosta, Hiles and talk of former #1 recruit Cody Gardner are also waiting in the wings. If the Gardner thing were to happen it certainly changes the dynamic at this weight.

Thoughts?

There was a nice interview on ohiowrestlingsite.com with Coach Ryan and he discussed the lineup much as you do. He also said the Bucks had 3 guys at 174 that were transferring in. He couldn't name names. One would seem to be dave Rella which is very exciting news, esp. if he's eligible to compete this season.

One poster once suggested that Johnstone move down to 149 while the Bucks redshirt Palmer. I still like that idea and hope the Bucks would consider it. There's a good argument to make as to why it would be a great idea. But I trust that Ohio State's staff (Ryan, Rosselli, Rowlands, Thatcher, Heskett, Vondruska and Elliott Lewis) considers all possibilities.

Quote from Bob Preusse's post:

"odds are Rella will be a buckeye-- will have to sit out a year because he is leaving a Big Ten school for another Big Ten school, he will have 2 years left, will wrestle at 174 in 2009. "

[i] this is true, isn't it? So Magrum will start at 174.. as Tom Ryan said at the Luncheon. He seemed pretty excited for C.J., and I am too, getting a little more northwest Ohio represented in Columbus!

As for the Palmer-Johnstone-Nemec situation, I really don't especially like the idea of Lance red-shirting, just because he's such an athlete and a year without him can hurt us as a team, but Nemec is ready for some action, so if Johnstone bumped up to 57 and Lance sat, I wouldn't be 100% opposed. <smile>

i doubt lance will sit, i have a feeling he just wants to wrestle and if he does the coaches will put him on the mat. Just my thoughts though.

There is talk on themat.com that Gardner will be a 197 next year. THis would be very goo for the Bucks b/c it would allow Weakley a redshirt b/f challenging at 197 or stepping in when Gardner moves up to challenge at 285. Depth in the upper weights would be nice.

belief is now that if Rella receives a FULL release he will not have to sit. And i now think he in fact is likely to get that Full release, though its not official yet and wont be until he is admitted to another college.

football rules are different i've learnd over the years--- i know Justin Boren the Michigan O lineman trf to Ohio St will have to sit a year, so i assumed Rella would----- But i don't think Rella will have to sit based on recent info i have received---- if Rella chooses Ohio St and is admitted, then he can wrestle right away, at 174 i assume.

You're right. And more to the point, Coach Ryan has a history of not using redshirts. He's always wanted the best guys on the mat.

IF Rella were to choose Ohio st and be able to wrestle next season, esp at 174---- and IF a good 285 emerges from a cast of thousands, i would expect Ohio st to make a run for all the marbles next season . So they would have to have Palmer at 149 in that case.

Yeah, with J & Mike coming back as NCAA champs, and next year being J's last, you almost have to keep Lance in the line-up and hope Nikko, Colt & Reece improve to the point of scoring lots of points in March. Let Johnstone & Nemec battle it out for starting spots; nice backup at that wgt. nonetheless. And if we get some production at 174, 197 & 285. it will be icing on the cake. Beside, Lance came very, very close to beating Metcalf in the NCAA tournament. For some reason, Jenkins hasn't been able to improve in his matches against Metcalf, whereas Lance nearly got that 3rd period TD to beat him in St. Louis!

i talked at length to DAVE RELLA yesterday at the state freestyle tourn at Wadsworth, he IS applying for admission to Ohio St U---- and he DID get a FULL release so he would be eligible to wrestle next season for the buckeyes. His wt will be 174 he told me.

the University cannot say anything until Rella is admitted, but Dave told me that this info is ok for public knowledge as far as he is concerned.

Just got off the phone with a buddy that was at Wadsworth this weekend... I asked who he thought was most impressive. I fully expected him to say E. Cubberly or C. Phillips...

His opinion was that Magrum was far and away the most dominant wrestler there this weekend! To that end, what are the chances that he challenges Weakley at 197?

I'm still very curious as to where Cody truly weighs in at. There was a lot of talk at him being able to make 174 his first year in and the reason he was at 189 was because of Keith Witt being at that weight. Did he look like a very solid 189 at Freestyle states? As for the future, I believe after a year or two of bulking up, his frame will allow for him to compete at 197 and it should be an interesting battle between him and John W.

I am no expert in this but did speak to a compliance officer, a SID, an asst coach, and an associate AD at three different B10 schools several times about an eligible one-time transfer. While not discussing a specific athlete or the two specific schools; each stated an eligible "wrestler" w/out a previous transfer would be immediately eligible to compete with a full or unrestricted release and acceptance into the second school. Each added the BUT they would NEVER be able accept an ATHLETIC scholarship at the second B10 school.

Six things to consider for eligibility in a 4-4 B-10 transfer

1. Academic standing at B10 school #1.
2. Length of time at B10 school #1 (must be 1 year)
3. Acceptance into B10 school #2
4. Have they transfered before
5. Sport
6. Restricted or Unrestricted Release

FB, M/W basketball, M hockey, and baseball are the only five sports that are required by the B10 and NCAA to have an athlete sit out a year. Think in terms of transfers that the NCAA is federal while the B10 is state and the schools are local when it comes to the rules. Different conferences have different rules for intraconference transfers.

I was referred to two different releases that further explain and detail the different rules and exceptions involving transfers

http://www.msu.edu/~msuncaa/Comp%20Newsletter%20Vol%202%20Issue%205.pdf

Pages 3 and 4 discuss transfers in the MSU compliance release. Below is the NCAA release on transfer requirements, rules, restrictions etc (Baseball was added last season to the the exempt sports requiring an athlete to sit)

http://www.NCAA.org/library/general/transfer_guide/2007-08/2007-08_transfer_guide.pdf

Football rules do not apply to wrestling. Boren is in a restricted sport that is not eligible for a one time exception (FB). In his case he played as a true freshman and sophomore at Michigan. He is required by both the NCAA and therefore the B10 to sit out. He can use his RS year this season as he still has three for two remaining. If he did not have an available RS he would have lost a year. Like ANY B10 to B10 transfer he can never receive an athletic scholarship at OSU.

As it applies to Rella I have no idea of his academic standing at PSU, the nature or wording of his release, or if he would be accepted as a transfer at OSU. With an unrestricted release and acceptance into OSU he could compete in year one pending the decision of the coaching staff. As Bob spoke to Dave two of the three requirements seem to be in order and it looks like he will be an option at 174 pending acceptance into OSU.

With a restricted release he could have still chosen to go to OSU but would be required to sit a year. Like Boren he still has three for two so he could have used his RS year if required to sit by a restricted release. Rella or the OSU staff could still choose to apply for a RS if he is eligible to compete if they deem it beneficial to the Rella's development or the long term plans of the program. I would ASSUME it would be a mutual decision since Rella would be paying his own way to go to OSU.

Like Bob stated, it appears as if OSU is setting up to make a title run and they will need all their horses ready to run including Rella or a capable 174 in the lineup.
