there is only one N.C.A.A. spot for every 41 high-school wrestlers. The numbers have been going downhill for a while. In 1982, there were 363 N.C.A.A. wrestling teams with 7,914 wrestlers competing; in 2001, there were only 229 teams with fewer than 6,000 wrestlers. Yet, in that same period, the number of N.C.A.A. institutions has increased from 787 to 1,049.
...... No wonder wrestlers are unhappy.
ouch. <thumbsdown>

Assuming Irving is correct in his statements (and I have no reason to believe he isn't), this is a great piece of literature that should be not only READ but UNDERSTOOD by Congress. Immediate action should be taken to remedy the situation.
I know we have much bigger problems in our country (economy, medical, war, welfare) but if we're going to precious Congress time (and our citzens' money!!!) on trivial things such as the Barry Bonds fiasco (again !!!), I think it is a more than worthy cause to have Congress do something about the decimation of the minor sports by the reverse-discrimination caused by an unjust interpretation of Title 9 (a third !!!).

DanC,
the "distinguished" Republican Senator from PA, Arlen Spector
wants Congress to
further investigate
whether the New England Patriots took film of the opposition's workouts in violation of NFL rules.
well Spector and his counterparts know its easier than tackling issues such as a War---- inner-city gangs, crime, joblesness, unwed mothers, drugs, despair & poverty ----- illegal immigrant issues-- millions of American citizens without health care-- an increasingly irresponsible youth culture--- parents who are afraid to actually "parent"---
the epidemic loss
of good paying manufacturing jobs to foreign countries--- and other such unpleasant matters that gravely effect our nation.
Gov't in America is out of control and out of touch, and though the
zealouts think a certain candidate or party will "change things",
it aint gonna happen folks.

Bob: I agree with your comments on politics. The two party system doesn't work for the people. It's all about each party trying to consolidate power. Without other challenges, they just attack each other. Every time one party gets a big advantage, they start to get more corrupt. Then the public support swings the other way.
I couldn't believe that congress wasted time investigating Roger Clemens. Who cares!
We need an influential media figure to take up our cause. That would help.

Hank,
i don't like either party, i'm an independent, but anyone who thinks the Dems have the answers is on LSD, imo.
look at Cleveland and Cuyahoga County, the latest major scandal here is the resignation/conviction of County Recorder O'Malley, a lynchpin of the Dem party here.
Even the very liberal Plain Dealer has turned on the Dems up here, so u know things are really bad.
i came to Cleveland for a job in 1972-- the Dems have controlled Cuyahoga County ever since i have been here and long before i came here --- and scandal and increasing poverty and loss of jobs & population is all i have seen year after year.
Cleveland was named the nations poorest big city a couple years ago. Cuyahoga County since 1970 under the Dems has gone from 1.9 million people to 1.3 million people today, a loss of 1/3 of our population
.
And the Dems have controlled Cleveland and Cuyahoga County all that time. The one major Republican office holder here in that time was George Voinovich term as mayor, and a Congressman or 2 long gone whose names i cant even remember (one took Dem Rosemary Oakar's office after she too was forced out of office by scandal).
Right now all major office holders in Cuyahoga County are Dems, incl County Commissioners, Mayor Jackson, our US Congressmen, etc.
Obama and and Clinton have campaigned here -- the Dems even held a Presidential debate here --- Cuyahoga County always votes heavily Democrat--- but i havent heard of any plan to restore the inner city where poverty, crime and despair reign supreme.
A pox on both parties, neither is capable nor honest nor to be trusted---but the Dems ??? ha, ha, have another pop of LSD if anyone thinks they have the answer.

correction:
i overlooked Republican Cleveland mayor Ralph Perk in the mid 70's---- he and Voinovich in the 1980's have been Cleveland's only Republican mayors starting in 1942, all the others were/are Dems.
no getting around it, in this heavily Democratic city & county, the Dems have overseen its severe decline.
But now they have the answer ??
i'm an indpendent, as i said, so plenty of blame to go around both parties.

Bob: I agree with you that many Cuyahoga. county dems have been corrupt and unaccountable. But the problems plaguing Cleveland are the same problems that face all of the industrial powerhouses of the past in the USA. The jobs are gone--either the companies have closed or exported them to a cheaper labor market overseas. I would also argue that the major "players" in Cleveland have usually been selfish and failed to see the bigger picture. The demise of Cleveland is not simple enough to merely pin on the dems. But they have been greedy and lacked vision.

Hank,
the Dems have been the party in power since WWII in Cleveland and Cuyahoga County, so yes the fault lies heavily on them.
It was "on their watch"
that this city went from one of the Worlds wealthiest to one of America's poorest.
and the level of corruption in Cleveland & Cuyahoga County since i've been here, since 1972, has been incredible. .

And to add to Bob's comment above, I also saw on the news that our Congress also wants to "investigate" whether or not the college BCS is a monopoly. So us taxpayers will end up paying for trips to football games, beer, dogs and peanuts. Talk about priorities.
